Jeff, with all due respect, a couple of off topic posts are not indicative of the end of the world being nigh. there are a good number of contributors to this thread posting new information on a regular basis, so perhaps we can be given a break once in awhile if somehow a tangent creeps in...

Sorry Michael, you're the wrong guy to complain about because your posts are usually spot on and informative. I was just getting a little frustrated after clicking on the 6th out of 7 posts in a row that were off topic. The number of A7/A7r threads are a little over whelming for those of us trying to keep up and learn, hence my impatience. Usually, I try to stay quiet unless I have something to add to the discussion.

I do find it curious you see nothing to learn from A7(r) images from 60 or so different RF lenses, but that's OK.

while on matters of notoriety, thanks for the excellent work at RFF, uhoh7. Very informative.

And a question: Adobe has a 'release candidate' for sony a7/a7r 'support', but I can't find if this is also final, if there is a final vsn coming, or if it needs to be updated later on. I dislike mucking around with this kind of thing and only want to do it once. Is this RC OK, or should I wait? I just want ACR to handle the files...

Jeff, no worries, really!

There has been so much to track with regards to these cameras... This one more than most, it seems.

haha you guys will be in trouble with all my snowboarding "fans"

don't you know all the pundits want to lynch me?

They can't believe anyone would rather hear the camera talk than them

As to adobe I have no clue and am holding off till I get my camera. By then I hope there's some well sorted info.

Maybe we'll do a thread some quiet place.

I'll respond because I don't think this thread has any "rules" about not posting comments.

I wasn't clear above. The images aren't ridiculous, it's your policing of your thread "rules" about no comments or discussion of the images that I find to be ridiculous.

If all I wanted to do was look at A7/A7r images, I could search flickr and the other RF forums. The reason I come to FM forums is that I enjoy and learn from the comments of the very knowledgeable people who hang out here and, yes, I would like to see their comments on the images.

Apologies for my OT comments.

certainly, in a forum with endless discussions, one lowly "image" thead is outrageous. :eek

what was I thinking?

The release candidate is Adobe's beta version, so no it is not final there will be a normal release later and will be found by Adobe update manager. I've been using the RC DNG converter without problems.

A note for Aperture users, I've been a “unsupported format“ error with some DNG files I've converted. I suspect this is due to Adobe's handling of the in camera lens correction, so I've turned this off. I have not imported any addition pics though, thus I cannot confirm if this is the case.

in the past amazon has been one of the slowest to ship preorders on cameras if i remember correctly.

This is my impression of Amazon too. They seem to get cameras 1-2 months after everyone else. I won't risk ordering from them again.

Speaking of preorder, BH had the 35 FE for sale today. I wonder what this means for the preorders. Why wouldn't they ship those out to the preorders first? Did they have enough to fullfill the preorders and ship extra out? If so, then I expect to have this lens next week to try on my NEX-7.

There will be a final 5.3 version following the Release Candidate, but whether it will contain additional changes over the current Release Candidate is unknown. I've reported some issues and have posted a question to Adobe as to whether further support for the new A7/r cameras will be included by 5.3 release.

thanks very much, kroyston, I'll check back at their site often.

The French can buy a kit A7 + 28-70 Sony zoom for 1529 Euros - under $2100.

Other European prices listed here:

Sony Canada's site has off and on shown the A7r "In Stock" on the landing page:

http://store.sony.ca/-mirrorless-cameras/cat-31-catid-Alpha-Mirrorless-Cameras

... but when you click through it used to say "Pre-Order". Now it simply says "Add To Cart".

Progress!

I guess they didn't sell out their allocation with pre-orders after all, or got more stock allocated.

Short user first experience account - the author finds the camera quieter than expectations after the internet build up over the shutter sound. Photos include some from a 17mm "Spiraltone" lens that has an interesting look, a little vignetting in the corners:

Pop Photo names A7r "Camera of 2013"; RX1 a runner up, first time two Sony cameras competed for their top 'award':

Here's their evaluation, published Nov 25 (today):

Nothing new not already well documented in these threads jumped out at me.

Apologies for interrupting the hype and A7(R) availability chat with few questions:

A) Do A-mode (aperture priority) and M-mode (manual mode) remember the last aperture used in that mode OR will the aperture be same in both modes? *

B) How Apple typically supports Sony cameras; how well/fast? In May 2013 I got my first Sony camera, but it was years old (A850) and therefore it was naturally supported. I'm using Apple Aperture for RAW-processing, and I see no point getting A7(R) before (if I get one at all) my workflow supports it.

* Why I'm asking this is that I like very much how Canon Live View and A&M-modes work. I can shoot even lenses with focus shift handheld and still focus with correct aperture. Example of shooting workflow (all happens in seconds even it has multiple steps):
1. Set A-mode to f/2.8
2. Set M-mode to correct exposure for lightning conditions and subject
3. Switch to A-mode
4. Focus
5. Switch to M-mode
6. Take photo

In addition to focus shift I use this for stop down landscape focusing, with lenses which improve microcontrast when closing 1-aperture down. E.g. I like to focus Carl Zeiss Makro-Planar 2/100 with f/2.8, instead of focusing wide open, at least in some situations when extra micro contrast makes focusing considerably easier.

Also I have understood that lens is always at shooting aperture when shoot with A7(R) [and NEX-cameras], so this technique would also needed for accurate focusing with super good lenses like Otus and CZ 2/135 ZE.

Samuli
