Just came up to speed on the news via this thread. Guess that 1Ds3 upgrade isn't happening for me. Two lenses are going to kick ass on my new A7r: the 280/4 Apo-Telyt-R (big), and 28 Elmarit-M ASPH (tiny). No more mirror strikes and mirror box obstructions. This cameras is the FM Altie wet dream - no need for Sony/Zeiss glass.

I asked this earlier but didn't see any response. Does anyone know what the flash options are? Does it have a mount that will work with pocket wizards or other wireless triggers?

Yes - Sony did away with the old Minolta proprietary mount as of the NEX-6 (not NEX-7) IIRC.

All new NEX as well as the RX1s and A7s have a universal hot shoe (with Sony extensions for their own flash products).

I'll keep my RX1 for now but I'm very much looking forward to future models. I'll stick to the RX1 for both economical reasons and the feature set. Coming models will make me "switch" though. That will be when Sony gives us a responsive and silent shutter, a tilt-able left side EVF and faster lenses.

When buying the original Panasonic G1 back in November 2008 I knew this was the future. Since then I have owned, for a short period, a heavy FF DSLR complete with a dark optical viewfinder, a flapping mirror and an autofocus system out of phase. Lol. Never again.

It will be interesting to see what IQ we'll get from the A7r sensor tech when used together with smaller wide angle lenses. I'm also very much interested in learning about the current Leica M 50 Lux and the A7r. It never worked that well on my Nex 5.

Any recommendations for a macro lens for the A7/A7r?

Heh can't decide…

what's the actual autofocus difference? Is the A7R comparable to say a nex 5N, whereas the regular A7 is better? I'm fine with the autofocus of my Nex 5N.

and that Zeiss 35, hm at 5 times what I paid for my e-mount Sigma 30mm f2.8….

I'll be keeping my nikon 24 f1.4 and 105 macro for now

Not sure if this has been posted but a B&H interview with a Sony USA rep:

Thanks for that.

One thought came to me from watching it, regarding the AF issues with the a7r: meaning not really that fast even with the native glass.

My primary concern is good performance with RF glass. But it's nice to have the versatility of a good autofocus system. The guy in your video mentions that Laea4. I have both LAEa1, and two. The differences pretty remarkable. Laea2 is a very fast focuser. The LAEa4 is also super fast.

For Alpha glass, I have the 7o400 G, and 35/1.8. More to the point sigma is about to release a 2470 F/2. Also, there are a number of decent wide zooms 10–22.

Hence, the a7r really could lead a dual life. Theoretically :-)

Best bang for buck modern macro would be the Sigma trio: 70, 150 APO OSS, and 180 APO OSS. Old macro, I believe the best would be Tokina/Vivitar Series 1 90/2.5. You can fit in the Voightlander 125/2.5 if you don't mind the current price hike (Sigma might be better though).

For macro it depends a bit on what you want to shoot and if you need 1:1 or greater, or if 1:2 is good enough. One of the nice things about these cameras is that you should be able to shoot the Canon MPE65 5:1 macro if you use the metabones EF adapter. That is a fairly unique lens. I also am a fan of the shallow depth of field possible with the Z* 100 f/2 makro but it is only 1:2. There are lots of good macro lenses out there however. If you want a small size then something like the Olympus OM 50mm f/3.5 is a very sharp lens and quite small.

I am a little surprised regarding the camera's operating ranges of 32 degrees F to 104 degrees F (0 degrees C to 40 degrees C).

Do you think that Sony will come out with an external battery with a wire for colder temperatures or do you think that swapping out batteries will cut it in the cold? I ordered 3 extra batteries for my Pre-order of the A7r. I hope that by keeping the batteries warm in my jacket it will be sufficient to keeping the camera operating in the cold. 32 degrees F really isn't that cold to operate a

The coldest temps I've used my 5D2 in was -31 F (-35 C), at night, above the arctic circle. Worked fine. Kept an extra better in a pants pocket inside my snow pants.

If anything, I'd expect a weatherized mirrorless camera to hold up better in extreme temps. Lower capacity battery will just mean carrying a couple extras.

The problem is sony's wireless system and the lack of built in commanding...or even their knowledge of how their own system works. I still have to get my hands on a 430am to clarify the rx1 after initial pairing doesn't require it to be mounted. Then they have the massive delays reported when dealing with their system. This is another area where they really have to change hints to draw over dslr users IMO. Especially with their fastest lenses at 2.8

And the hotshoe change is every Nex with a shoe beyond the 7 right?

My favorites on the a99 are the Leica Elmarit-R 60/2.8 and APO 100/2.8, though both are native 1:2 lenses and require tubes or optical accessories to achieve 1:1. For 1:1 native, I like the Mamiya A 120/4. For cheap and light, I have the Minolta MD 100/4, which I like using on NEX-7 and will be curious to see how it performs on the FFs.

So am I the only one who likes the looks of these cameras? I'll admit, I was a little disappointed when the rumors about the "slightly larger NEX-7" styling rumor were quashed, and I frowned deeply when I saw the shutter release on the top plate. But I love the EVF on the a99, especially the eyecup, so I'm not disappointed to see it show up here. And I'm happy to see the nav wheels on the grip and back, which makes up for the shutter release position. If I can set up ISO and magnification they way it is on the 7, I don't foresee any usability issues.

Nope. I love the look. I am especially looking forward to using the grip and the 24-70 and 70-200mm lenses on it. My enthusiasm is just dampened considerably when I realize that it will be at least a year before both those lenses are actually available...

I like the overall concept of the look. I just don't think it was executed as well as Sony usually manages. They should have changed some of the angles of the EVF hump, so that the Sony logo isn't so relatively small and low, and the way the grip intersects the area between the top plate in body line is a little weird. It's not terrible to me. It just looks little unfinished...not that it matters. Oddly, whereas small lenses look better on NEX cameras, I think larger lenses look better on the A7. I guess it's because the EVF hump provides some balance.

Yeah, waiting on the native lenses will be a test of patience. Hopefully the 24-70 will come early next year or before, but the longer zoom sounds like it's more than a few months away. You could always augment with the Canon FD 80-200/4L in the meantime. It's like a mini-magic drainpipe. It's the first push-pull lens I've used where I felt the results were worth the hassle.

Agreed. And the placement of the EFV is logical for use with larger lenses.

There's a part of me that wonders if not sticking with the 6/7 stylings was a conscious decision on Sony's part to break away from the impression that these are somehow meant to be RF killers as much as it was to accommodate desirable technology at a small size.

Where does it say that the A7 does NOT have off set micro lenses and that the A7r does? I haven't been able to find this.
