p.1 #1 · Canon LP-E6 battery charging issues

I got an email today from Canon Canada saying that there may be an issue with Canon LP-E6 battery chargers. By pure chance, I have one of these problem chargers. Here is what the email says:

"
This symptom may occur when a Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 has been discharged due to being unused for a prolonged period of time, such as when it is first purchased.
If this occurs, please follow the procedure below.

Procedure
1.Plug the Canon Battery Charger LC-E6, with the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 inserted, into a power outlet.
2.Wait for 20 seconds. If during this time the orange lamp blinks once per second, please continue to charge the battery until the green lamp lights up, which indicates a full charge. At this point, the battery is ready for normal use, and there is no need to follow the remaining steps.
If during this time the orange lamp blinks rapidly, please move on to Step 3 of this procedure.
3.If the orange lamp blinks rapidly, remove the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 from the Canon Battery Charger LC-E6.
4.Wait for 10 seconds.
5.Reinsert the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 into the Canon Battery Charger LC-E6.
6.The Canon Battery Charger LC-E6’s orange lamp should begin to flash slowly (once per second) and charging will begin. Please note: If the orange lamp blinks rapidly again, please repeat steps 3-5 above. If, after a third attempt, the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 does not charge, please contact the Canon Customer Support Center for assistance.

7.Charge the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 until the green lamp on the Canon Battery Charger LC-E6 illuminates, signifying that the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 is fully charged.
"

I called them as the proecdure didn't work, and they are sending me a new charger. My charger had the same problem with about 10 OEM batteries.

Good job Canon

Hi Charles,

I got the same message. My two LC-E6 seem to be OK.

Or put the battery in a 3rd party charger.

I've had problems with some non-Canon batteries and even pitched a few!

I know this is an old thread.

LP E6 batteries are driving me insane!

I don't know if one of my chargers (or both) is bad or if the batteries just suck.

Basically I am going through about 2 batteries every (I keep six in rotation) six months, and to be blunt I am tired of spending the money on something that I know is going to be tossed away soon.

Is there any way to reset, or recondition the crappy LP E6 batt?

Are they original Canon batteries?

I guess I'm lucky as my 6 OEM LP-E6 have been great. The only crappy battery was a Sterlingtrek.

That has not been my experience at all. My LP E6 from 2009 are out of bars, but still work. The 2010-2013 batteries are all fine, with none having less than two bars remaining.

And another question: What charger? One of the "new" ones (5D mkIII, 6D, 70D) or pre-2012?

There was the issue with the new Canon chargers ( Canon Battery Pack Service Notice ) which a lot of folks thought came out to keep 3rd party batteries off the streets. I keep imagining batteries with leather jackets, tattoos and switchblades.

I've got 4 Canon originals, and 6 "other" batteries, 4 of them Wasabi. I haven't used the charger that came with my 6D, and had zero issues using either my old Canon charger or the Wasabi charger. I can say the Wasabi don't last quite as long as my no-name or Canons; this is pretty slight but noticeable.

Anyway, if it's a new charger that might be part of your problem, especially if using third party evil batteries.

Which may damage the batteries beyond repair, as some Sony A7 owners have discovered...

Original Canon 5DIII chargers and batteries.

Sounds like I am the only person having problems?

OK I'll check out my gear, hello CPS!

I got a 5DIII to back up my 1Dx but had forgotten how lame the LP-E6 batteries were. My Canon original battery is DOA out of the box. Fortunately B&H had tossed in a 3rd party battery that seems to work fine. Can't imagine how much hassle it's going to be to try to get the OEM battery replaced. (Please don't make me send the whole thing back!)

One gets really spoiled with the power of the 1D( ) batteries.
