If you need the bazooka go for it...........but a 200 2.8 and a 400 5.6 plus a 1.4X TC to use with both primes...will put the 100-400 to rest for good!
Then you get a 100mm 2.0........forget it............
Here's just a few pics with this lens at different distances and f/stops; there's many more in my galleries if you're interested....IMO the 100-400 is a wonderfully versatile lens, just about my favorite. Sure, primes +TC might be sharper and better overall image quality, but having the zoom range and not having to swap lenses all the time is a great asset. A great price/perfomance value for an "L" lens, and I don't think you'd be unhappy with owning this great glass
How much post-process has been done on these pics? I'm seriously thinking of gettting the 100-400 IS - two things are slowing me down: money and the thought of lugging the extra weight - but I'd rather do minimal post-processing (raw conversion, white balance tweak, exposure tweak, a little sharpening, all done in C1). I really like your images, but if you had to do a lot of curves tweaking to those results, then the 100-400 is probably not for me.
I develop the raw in C1, where I generally boost saturation about 7% upon conversion to TIFFS, make any minor exposure corrections and adjust white balance if needed. As you know, all simple quick minor stuff in C1. These pics were shot with either a Rebel or MKII, so I do sharpen (100/.7/0) and/or contrast boost (20/50/0) using USM (I often oversharpen, a bad habbit I'm trying to break lol) in photoshop prior to print. That's about it.
The post-processing shouldn't factor into your equation when considering this lens. The weight is a bit heavy at first, but I've lugged it around the Everglades all day and you do get used to it. I also carry among other things a 70-200 2.8/IS, so my camera bag now has wheels The weight is worth it And the money, it's the best IS value out there I think....

No more post-processing than with any other lens
Thanks! I think... I'm not sure which answer I was hoping for (lots of post-processing or none). After having just spent a bunch of money of getting a bunch of trees removed, buying a new heat pump, and paying my property taxes and homeowner's insurance, and also needing to get my pickup truck worked on before winter and getting my car insurance bill and really wanting to get a 20D, I'm not sure I can afford to get the lens!

Well, someone just needs to get his priorities in order
I've really never been able to budget out my lenses either, but that's never stopped me lmao...
