Hey Phillip,

Thank you for a very informative review! I'm planning to get this lens and hope you could answer me a couple of questions
- I didn't get your test about decentered lens, was the displacement of the green door in the corner pictures, which showed the flaw? Did you contact Sony to get a replacement?
- The pictures in the review (which are rich in colors and contrast) - are they directly out of the camera or have you done any pp to them?

Thank you!
Pengzi

Hi Pengzi

the decentering test worked like this: I placed the door in the center of the viewfinder and focused on it, using manual focus. Then I took 4 pictures, in each picturei placed the door in another corner of the image.
With a perfectl centered lens all images would have shown the same sharpness.
Because the A7 was announced I retourned the lens without a problem to Sony.

The images are obviously processsed as statedin the review.
Only the sharpness tests are not processed.

Phillip

Philip - Sorry to resurrect an old thread, but I am currently reviewing the 16-70/4, and my sample has a very small amount of play in the zoom ring before it starts actually zooming. I mean that if I start to turn, the ring moves slightly (less than 1mm), then catches, then starts the zoom action. It's very slight, but it is more a tactile thing than anything that hinders the zoom. (You feel a little click when operating the zoom ring rather than having it just solidly connected) Is this the case on your lens, or does this copy just have something slightly less tight than others? I just want to make sure I clarify this in my review as a one-off thing or as something that is part of the design.

I don't recall that it had that issue and I think I would have noticed.

My A6000 and 16-70 are on the way and should be delivered today or Tuesday.
I am a Canon user for 20 years and get great quality prints out of my 5 D2 and 24-70 2.8L lens. Do you think my new A6000 and 16-70 will give me as good of raw files. I shot some flowers last weekend with my 100mm Macro and my 5D2 which I can print up to 24 inch print with no problem. I have my doubts about doing this with the A6000.

I just checked mine and I didn't notice any play at all in the zoom ring when I started zooming back and forth.

My review should be done sometime in the next week. So far it looks like quite a good lens. I'll also be doing a direct comparison with the 18-105mm f/4.

Any chance of a test against the Fuji 18-55?

I've thought of doing that as well. I've done some informal testing between all three in similar scenarios, and I think they're all pretty close. There may be some differences, but they don't look like they'll be huge.

Jordan - my copy of the 16-70 does not exhibit the "play" as you mention - I also believe that copy does not have the "decentering" issue others are finding.

I don't have much time in using the lens and still learning it's strength/weaknesses - two quirks I'm finding.

It does not seem to have a strong depth of field - i.e. landscape type scene at 16 to 18mm, f5.6 to f8 (Nex6) the foreground and mid-scene is nicely sharp across the frame & into the corners, but the IQ of the infinity horizon really falls off.

As mentioned in the a6000 thread - the 16-70 exhibits a real funky halo with distorted rays on bright lights in night photography at f5.6-f8 - I never tried stopping down further as of yet.

Looking forward to your review.......

Good to note that the play is just this copy.

Optically, this sample seems even across the frame and quite good throughout the focal range. Need to shoot much more with it, of course. I have it until Friday and will probably start writing the review over the weekend.
