p.1 #1 · Non-waking/Powering off issue with 5D3 and an LP-E6 battery.

My 5D3 won't wake from sleep/turns itself off with what I have labelled battery 3 (B3).

With B1 and B2 the 5D3 will sleep and wake, but B3 seems to have a fault.

The battery indicator will flash that the battery is flat (though it is not) and then the 5D3 shuts down and won't wake/power on until I cycle the on/off switch.

Any similar experiences with LP-E6's?

None. Is that a genuine Canon battery?

Paul,

I had this exact problem on my 1dx. Sent it in to CPS, they said nothing wrong with it, they reloaded the software and it hasn't happened again.

What version of firmware are you running? Have you installed the Magic Lantern Bootflag?

If you have the latest firmware installed (1.2.1) and are NOT using Magic Lantern, proceed.

1. Detach the lens
2. Delete registered battery info, from all batteries, mark the bad one with tape
3. Clear all camera settings.
4. Clear all custom functions.
5. Clear C1,C2,C3 modes.
6. Clear Custom controls.
7. remove the battery
8. turn the camera on with no battery installed for 5 minutes.

Start over and this time don't register the marked battery and see if the malfunction reoccurs.

If it does reoccur, do step one through 8 again, this time re-install firmware 1.2.1 with one of the good batteries freshly charged.

Since his malfunction only happens when that particular #3 battery is installed, your procedure is missing the point. I'd suggest that he should do the resets you outline and install the troublesome battery and see if the camera works OK. If not, the battery should be replaced. If it is fine, then he should add the other batteries one at a time to see if the problem repeats once 2 or 3 batteries have been registered. We already know it works fine with the other two batteries.

Thanks guys.

One thing I have noticed - and I think it is as simple as a dodgy battery - is that Battery #3 (B3) takes forever to reach full charge - the charger led will blink away for hours before turning green, whereas the other batts charge properly.

I'll look at it later - off to work, again.

I've had the same thing happen a few times recently. The problem I have is that I use a grip with two batteries and I haven't been able to narrow it down to which battery is the culprit.

I left B3 on the charger until the green LED showed full charge.

I went and shot for about 20 minutes and all was fine - until the charge dropped.

After 20mins of use with the battery slightly drained, the flat battery indicator flashed in the LCD.

The 5D3 wouldn't turn on - it thought B3 had no charge.

I removed the battery, powered on, and it showed all bars of the battery.

It goes to sleep and wakes fine, for now.

Battery door?

So the fault returned after more use. The camera would shutdown and not wake. I had to cycle the power switch and even then it would only power on occasionally. When it wouldn't power on I had to open the battery door and re-seat the battery and then cycle the on/off switch.

The battery was showing 3/4 charge when the 5D3 would start, but then a minute or so afterwards it would erroneously show no bars - a flat battery.

I have contacted Canon to see if they are at all interested in testing a faulty battery - though I imagine some poor bespectacled chap in some dusty corner of Canon is aware that LP-E6's do, at times, have faulty chips.

Canon have stated there's no warranty but have asked for me to send it in for testing - it'll go in the post tomorrow.

If I have read this right everything you have done has pointed to this being a duff battery. For the sake of a new battery is this all really worth it?

Personally I don't think what you are doing is particularly good for the camera either.

The tooling around was to definitively check it is stuffed. I'm done with it.

It's going in the post to Canon out of curiosity - I'm not trying to save it.

Canon called and said a tech has torn it apart and found corrosion (from a battery I have owned from new from Adorama for about 18 months). Whether the corrosion is from leaky cells, or surface corrosion from humidity, I am not sure.

It has had less use than my other batteries but has treated the same way so potentially a crappy battery out of the factory.

For $20 they'll send it back, serviced.

If there was corrosion on the inside, I would not bother. If it is coming from a leaky cell, even if they clean it up, it will just return. Better off just getting a new battery.

Thinking I would pay the $20.00, don't think Canon would send you a battery that may/may not cause additional problems. Serviced may mean a new battery.
You had a problem and you put forth the effort to send it in so they could inspect the battery and find out if they have a production problem.

Exactly, Ron. It's good to put faulty gear in front of them - hopefully things get reported up the chain.

Is this the reason they asked that you send them the faulty battery?

This symptom may occur when a Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 has been discharged due to being unused for a prolonged period of time, such as when it is first purchased. If this occurs, please follow the procedure below.
Procedure
1. Plug the Canon Battery Charger LC-E6, with the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 inserted, into a power outlet.
2. Wait for 20 seconds.
If during this time the orange lamp blinks once per second, please continue to charge the battery until the green lamp lights up, which indicates a full charge. At this point, the battery is ready for normal use, and there is no need to follow the remaining steps.
If during this time the orange lamp blinks rapidly, please move on to Step 3 of this procedure.
3. If the orange lamp blinks rapidly, remove the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 from the Canon Battery Charger LC-E6.
4. Wait for 10 seconds.
5. Reinsert the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 into the Canon Battery Charger LC-E6.
6. The Canon Battery Charger LC-E6’s orange lamp should begin to flash slowly (once per second) and charging will begin.
Please note: If the orange lamp blinks rapidly again, please repeat steps 3-5 above. If, after a third attempt, the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 does not charge, please contact the Canon Customer Support Center for assistance.
7. Charge the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 until the green lamp on the Canon Battery Charger LC-E6 illuminates, signifying that the Canon Battery Pack LP-E6 is fully charged.

Use of non-genuine Canon Battery Packs
The situation may also occur when attempts are made to charge non-genuine Canon Battery Packs in the Canon Battery Charger LC-E6. However, the procedure provided above does not apply to the use of non-genuine Canon products.

I'm having the exact same problem! Except that it happens regardless of the battery! It started a few days ago at a wedding, which was great.

I'm using the Canon battery grip, and the problem occurs with: the battery that accompanied the body (about 2 years old), a battery from the 5dii days (4 or 5 years old?), 2 very new off-brand batteries, and the optional AA adapter with 6 eneloops inside. All well charged. Rubbed all lens and battery contacts I could find. I've taken off the grip and just used one in the body, same problem. Camera won't wake, I have to toggle the on/off switch. Sometimes that doesn't work, have to re-insert the battery. Even that doesn't always return power. Worse still, the camera doesn't have to have gone to sleep to evince this problem! Just in normal use it will shut down, and blink an empty battery icon at me. So I can't even disable the sleep timer to ensure a wakeful camera.

Happened maybe 15 times over the course of a 10-hour wedding with LP-E6 batteries, and seemed to increase in frequency in later testing. It's a semi-sporadic problem thus far, with no discernible rhyme or reason. But thoroughly unnerving, and potentially ruinous as an event photographer tasked with capturing very important and fleeting moments. I had been shooting the whole day prior to the wedding without a problem, and it had never been an issue before. I'll probably send it to Canon, but I have shoots lined up and won't be able to part with the camera until August. Any thoughts would be very welcomed on a seemingly non-battery-specific solution to this problem.
