Fantastic shots, Tim. I am glad you were in the right spot for those shots. Many never get to experience things like that. Here you captured it.

just awesome tim! this must have been really amazing to watch. i would have soiled myself once i realized what was going on. might have even forgot to shoot! all of these are stunning. i think the gbh can be fiercer than people might think - that big beak can really wreck shop! hopefully a few more coming.....
dorian
Yes Dorian, GBH's sure can be tough customers and BE's sometimes are quite easily intimidated. But... the eagles always scared up the herons meals! It was an experience I'll never forget and hope to repeat next year. Thanks!

Rockin' good show my friend! That is a bizarre match up you witnessed and recorded with great precision
I still can't figure out what is in front of the Heron in pic#2?
Those are impressive talons on the Eagle Tim but the sword of a beak of that Heron looks mighty deadly too. Cool combat zone and these are amazing man, sweet!
Karl
In front of 2 is the sculpin (a fish) that the heron was trying to swallow. The eagles would swoop down and scare them into dropping them and then steal them.
It was great stuff to see my friend, thanks for the nice words Karl!
Stunning sequence Tim.
I heard they have been having problems up there during nesting season with eagles coming in and eating GBH chicks. Now there going after adults. Wow.
Rick
Excellent set Tim. I really enjoyed these. I witnessed an eagle and GBH go at it once over a large fish the heron had caught but couldn't swallow. The heron stabbed at the eagle several times with its bill but the eagle took the fish after a bit. Unfortunately the photos were poor quality but it was fun to watch.

Yes Rick, locally the eagles decimated a rookery this year. These eagles were going after the herons fish not the herons per se. Thanks a bunch!!

Great story Candor! The adults seemed to have this figured out and stole the food rather efficiently, the young ones, well, lets say they were less successful. Thanks!
