p.3 #1 · For 1D owners out there... the Sigma 18-35mm 1.8 works on a 1.3x crop!

Hi John,

Finding gear that suits our needs is a very personal exercise, kinda like buying underwear...it's gotta fit right. I consider myself very fortunate to have shops like B&H and Adorama, etc. just a short train ride, or drive, away from me. I try not to purchase anything without spending some belly-time at the counter trying gear "on". I find myself continually suggesting this practice to folks on the boards looking to make a purchase.

As for Sigma lenses, I've always found that they have provided me with great optical and mechanical performance, I enjoy their ergonomics, and they've allowed me to not have to sacrifice (too much) IQ (sometimes) just because I was spending less money than what Canon was offering me in the same focal length. As for the "(too much) IQ (sometimes)" caveat I mentioned, the 80-400mm OS and 17-35mm EX DG come to mind. But even still, both of those lenses had their sweet spots and produced for me the images I was looking to create. As for the rest of my Siggy line-up, no complaints here, I am one happy shooter!

However, if the trousers don't fit, don't buy them!

FWIW, the worst performer in my line-up is that Canon 10-22mm...it's been on near-permanent loan to a friend!

Thanks for the samples Cody, much appreciated. Do you have any at the wide end of the range, 18 to 24mm? How good is it wide open? How do you like the build and AF speed?

Build is 10/10
Wide open 10/10 sharpness on my 70D and 1D Mk III 5D Mk II needs micro adjusting with the dock

24mm works fine on the 1.3x sensor, but not so much on the 5D II, I would say it starts to get usable just past this at around 26-28mm. The 1D Mark III is usable down to 20mm IMO. I'll take some fresh shots and post when its daylight and I'm not in the office.

Awesome, thanks Cody. Good, practical review for a the application of APS-C lens on non crop bodies.

Sweet. Maybe I should've bought this lens and put the 16-35 on the chopping block - and put the money towards getting the new body while stopping the chase for faster lenses - but I can't bring myself to this yet. :-)

on a APS-H sensor, I could see that as a strong possibility. But if you use your 16-35 on a FF the only real substitute is a 16-35 II ;-)

I don't have a FF camera anyways (and no plans to get one). For the clarification, my 16-35 is already a II version. But this Sigma got me thinking.

Found this old thread and got excited. Will both Sigma's f1.8 zooms fit to this category?

The 50-100 has been evaluated in this regard by Lenstip.com, and I quote them on this:

[...]the shape of the vignetting indicates that the lens would cooperate nicely with older EOS-1 series Canon cameras equipped with the APS-H sensor.
