p.7 #1 · Gitzo vs. RRS tripod

My original markins had screw type clamps and was later converted to LL. Sunway, Vanguard and Giottos are relatively recent in this market. The only sunway plate I did try at B&H did fit the RRS lever lock. Those other 2 I don't take too seriously.

I'm still waiting for Sunway to deliver on the GH-Pro geared head announced back in 2013. Communicated with them recently and they simply said not ready yet.

Just got in my TVC-34 Versa Series 3 tripod today. I emailed RRS for a status update on the order yesterday and right away like three people got back to me and it came UPS today. So far I'm a happy camper.

I've got the TVC-23 now - and I have to admit it's really big
I'm not sure if it's not overkill for my 5D III and 200mm/2.8 II max

The TQC-14 with BH-30 would be sufficient as well I guess..

I find it difficult to understand when people are unwilling to pay a premium for the very best camera supports. If you require a tripod, you want it to provide the most reliable and stable platform for your camera and with the very best tripod/ball head combinations ( I have RRS 34L + BH55) costing about the same as a good camera body or high quality lens, it seems to me that in fact buying the best is a no-brainer. As to what is the best I'm pretty certain that all the high end offerings are excellent. Oh, and I

- because VR means they don't need a tripod so much anymore?

- because they aren't sure which brand really is the very best?

- because they aren't convinced the very best is worth the premium over what they have now (e.g RRS over Gitzo)?

- because no one has stolen their old Gitzos yet so they can spend the insurance $$ to replace it with RRS?

To add to that, the best can be overkill for some people, and the extra size and weight can make carrying it not enjoyable. I shoot entirely mirrorless right now, so I don't need a super heavy duty tripod and head. I have good stuff, which is light and works well in the field, and easily supports any of my camera and lens combinations. (I use an Induro CX213 carbon fiber pod that I like quite a bit, with a RRS BH-40, which is plenty of head for what I'm supporting.) I've had the legs for 5 years and they've been great. No need to upgrade to a RRS set of legs.

I don't understand those who buy the ultra cheapo crap tripods that are barely adjustable in the field and put a $30 plastic pan tilt head on with their high end gear.
