I mentioned your design to the other designer and asked whether it would be possible to have interchangeable backs somehow... One for shooting stitched with both horizontal and vertical movements and using the original GX680 lenses and then his design which incorporates just left/right shift on the back and allows the use of short focal length lenses like the Canon 17mm and 24mm TS-E II.
Would love to hear your thoughts if you get a moment?

Yes, I think the mirror box would have been a hindrance in the original design.. That is one of the reasons why mirrorless cameras are great, for all types of custom made modifications..
Without the mirrorbox on the Sony A7R, the Chiek GX680 design can get down to using movements using a Sigma 12-24mm on full frame.. This is due to this zoom throwing a bigger image circle than is needed for 35mm full frame.. He has also done the same with the Canon 17mm TS-E. I hear that the Nikon 14-24mm is the same, allowing movements as low as 14mm..
Ed Sawyer, are you comparing this to a 4x5 film camera or a 4x5 modified camera with a digital camera on the back... Either way, very different....
If comparing to a 4x5 film camera, different because this is digital..
If comparing to a modified 4x5 with a digital camera on the back, then you are really limited to lenses that aren't that wide.. I would say 35mm at an absolute stretch..
The only downside I can see in this system is the back only has rear shift left/right, so parallax free stitching is only available in a panoramic format.. Still, pretty cool and an improvement over the original GX680 which only had front movements..
It would be amazing if had both rear shift and rise/fall movements, as is suggested by the original designer here..
I posted this question to him and he said it becomes almost impossible this way to use on such wide lenses and that is why I posted the original question of possibly having interchangeable backs.. The Chiek Gx680 for using wide lenses and parallax free panoramic stitching and the original posters design of having the GX680 rear standard placed on the back so that it enables rear shift left/right and rise/fall enabling a much bigger stitching area using the original GX680 lenses..
If that was possible, then it would really be the ultimate mini-digital view camera!

It's cool from a proof of concept point of view, but I think for real-world usage, a 4x5 with film is still a more versatile, cheaper, and ultimately better method without all the various limitations described above. (e.g. can do single-shot captures, any amount of tilt/shift is available, lenses as wide as 47mm on 4x5 (12-13mm equiv on 35mm or so, 120deg AOV), etc.)
For digital afficionados of the above type of shooting, the world just needs a nice, cheap, high-res 6x7cm or 4x5in digital back. ;-) Someday maybe....

A question to Fred or other GX 680 users: If using the GX 680 lenses without the GX 680 camera body, this means without electricity on the lens contacts -
- the leaf shutter in the lens is permanently open or closed?
- the aperture can be closed manually by turning the aperture lever at the lens or does it stay open
?
Thx Christoph

Better late than never... @grasmuc, the aperture is permanently closed without electricity to open it during exposure. The DOF preview lever has no effect as long as the aperture is closed. In mirror up mode, and with the camera powered up, the aperture opens.
I'd love an update to this thread. I'm working on my own GX680/DSLR hybrid. Just getting started however.

Wow!
You say you are using major parts from two GX680 cameras. Are these broken parts cameras or are you sacrificing two working cameras? If so is this a permanent sacrifice or can you put the original cameras back together again? Just wondering about the scale and economics of this considering these are somewhat rare cameras?

Those portraits are stunning. While 6x8 neg may have something to do with it there is a craftsmanship to that work. Would love to know your lighting and scanning process

Actually, the lens shutter is opened when the lens is not mounted and the depth of field lever allows to close the aperture. So by taping the DoF lever closed, it is easy to close to any given aperture. Of course, it's quite easy to tinker a way to block the DoF lever in closed position in more practical ways than with tape!

I've tested the aperture on a few lenses and what I discovered is that if the last time the lens was mounted to a camera with power on, the state of the magnet inside the aperture control dictates the state it will be in once the lens is removed. So both states are possible. I had one lens with the aperture permanently shut when off camera and simply attaching it and opening up the aperture before removing it changed that closed state.
