I will check mine when I get home from vacation..it's been driving me crazy..center seems sharp but my faces never seem sharp as they should being that I have plenty of DOF.
Well here's a photo I wouldn't have thought to post here. Funny how you just never know whether a particular photo is even worth the effort to grab it, let alone whether it will have any legs.
Really nice set of images Russ. It's hard to select a favorite. What every your doing just keep doing it. Images are crisp, colors are great and the action is top notch. If you get a chance I would like to hear about what AF adjustments you made, or point me to the post from Eric I would like to hear what he had to say ...
Never mind found the post. Ill check my 400 tonight.
Sorry for my delay, Andy. I was just getting ready to post a link. Glad you found the post. Turned out for me that these screws were very loose on both my 400 and 300. Tightening them really made a difference. Thanks for your feedback.
FWIW, I was covering an MLS match a couple weeks ago, and my normally-reliable MkIV/400 combo pretty much pooped the bed. I was getting almost nothing in focus and had the odd "plane of focus" issues to which you referred where parts of subjects within the focal plane were sharp and others weren't. Since I'm a platinum CPS'er I sent the MkIV and 400 off to Canon and in addition to a general tune-up, they replaced the back of my 400. The next time out was MUCH better and I'm hoping things will continue to go well as the Summer progresses.
Sorry to hear about those issues, Dennis. Talk about that sinking feeling in the gut... Kind of helps you to realize how relatively reliable this equipment is that we depend on so much. When something goes wrong it verges on unbelievable. Your repairs don't sound cheap, but I hope you're good to go for the foreseeable future. And thanks for your feedback. It means a great deal coming from one who has provided plenty of inspiration.
Russ, not too bad. A couple hondo. There better be SOME benefit to shelling out $500 every year. One time sending the 400 to and from NJ and the membership almost pays for itself.
I didn't find out how bad things were until after the game, when reviewing my shots preparing to edit, caption and transmit. Luckily it crapped out in the second half, so I had some shots from the first half, and extra lucky we had two shooters at the match. Still, you're right - a sinking feeling is exactly what it was.
