Now that leaves Peter all alone waiting. Prayer chain for Peter.
Robert, prayers are always welcome and I am thankful for them, but I am not exactly lonely here....I've got a few gears such as these to keep me entertained.

I'd be happy with an EF 500/4L IS Mk I.
Oh, wait - I already have one. I'm happy.

So was I very happy, then I got the mk II and am loving how much lighter it is. Can hand hold it for a lot longer now and with 5D III it's not much heavier than a 1D X + 300 f/2.8L IS mk I combo.

Well, I can hold my 1DX + 500/4L IS all day. How many extra days do you get with the Mk II. ?
How long can you hold it at eye level for? I could carry my 500 mk 1 and 1 series around for hours, but only hold it at eye level for 5-10 minutes comfortably. Now I can hold it at eye level for much longer. Nowhere near as much need to rest between captures.

Same here.
I can handhold the MK I for 5 to 10, or 15 minutes at a time, over hours. OTOH, if I need to rest, I put it down. Gravity can be your friend.

I went out looking for pigeons, after work, for PetKal but all I could find was these fur-balls on my first day with my new 200-400. [Well actually a moose and a coyote and a bunch of bighorns and swainson's hawk but I am too tired to process right now and just grabbed some to show you.]
Its scarier shooting 5diii 200-400 than 7d/600 is my initial impression. Its hard to keep my knees from knocking at f4 with the grizzlies when they give me a stare.
Other:
Heavy but once the bears are staring at you - you forget
It is way smaller than 600, so it does not bump into everything in my jeep
switching back and forth 1.4x is easy and very conveniant
adjusting zoom is not easy given the weight and one hand holding lens and one hand holding shutter
I will give some more impressions tomorrow. These pictures need more processing and I am too tired.

I guess I'm the wimp here. With the aid of the neck strap and cradling the 1DX/400/TC in the crook of my arm I can survive for a few hours. But only comfortably at eye level for about a minute or so, certainly not 5 minutes.

Martian wildlife would be so nice to shoot, 1/3rd the gravity, even a 800L could be handheld all day at eye level.
Cool. I just booked my trip to tour the Martian ruins and go on a special Martian safari. The guy who sold me the tickets promised it would be a great trip for photography, glad to hear it confirmed and that I didn't get ripped off paying the guy on the corner $3000 cash for my Mars package.

PetKal: The only trouble is that when you switch 1.4x off and zoom wide to 200mm, you forget to think about whether you are too close. So zooming wide is great but you have to make sure you don't smell the bears. I had to keep both eyes open to watch the 4 bears at 200mm.
DB: It is not light but I can tell you that given it size it is easy to get in and out of the car quickly which for bear photography is reassuring. I am used to using the 600 so it does not feel heavy to me.
John_T: The only bait I use is my middle aged plumpness and lack of ability to outrun them.

I'll be up in Banff and Jasper NP in a couple weeks and I don't want to see brown bears this close. Nice photos though!
