Grant, I like the layout, but am not a fan of the font. Maybe something a little more modern (unless that's the school's official type style)?
okay. FYI: i am kinda slow so do you have any suggestions of more modern fonts?
The shirt emblem has SPARTANS (all caps), poster has only the "S" capitalized.. You want to match the school emblem as close as possible. Hard to be sure, but it looks like ORONO is also all caps on the logo. For the players name I would treat the first and last name the same (either all caps, or only first letter cap)?
Besides the font, I'm not in love with the "double strike" overlay. You have the mound as the primary and what looks to be the same shot underneath. Too much distraction there. If you want to keep it, consider lowering the opacity, blurring it, or going B/W. Or just change it altogether. Consider changing the size of the WILSON and the black strip underneath it. It's overpowering.
Grant, along with what's already been mentioned, I'd say you have a load of color distraction going on. The main image is solid, but the ambient colors (various greens, yellow, tan) don't mix well with the uni blue/red. Obviously none of that is your fault, but darkening all of that in the outer band kind of doubles the problem. Understand that I'm speaking specifically in terms of poster use here, where you have free license to go with whatever color scheme works (excluding changing the team's uni colors of course).
For that reason, I'm with Paul on considering a b/w or selective color approach. Anything but the ambient colors, really.
One other minor nit is that when I see obvious skin blemishes on players' faces, I fix that as best I can (using whatever tools work best) so the kid can feel good about how he looks in the poster. Part of that process is toning down or removing the redness of the blemishes. Just be careful that it doesn't look obvious, or too perfect.
