I've shot a bit of T&I now but it's mostly been baseball, football and cheer. Tonight was my first dance team work. Feel free to offer any critiques or suggestions. Many of the girls wanted to try something a bit different than their standard poses and I'm not even sure what a standard dance pose is, if there is one.
Your lucky I think. I shoot dance schools which are generally held in school halls so I need to be super portable. So cloth backdrop which always end up scrunched as they kids move on them. Also the need to get 20 + kids through in a 45 minute class slot in which time you have to have two poses and a head and shoulder shot of each kid THEN organise the class photo. Its a challenge so not much opportunity to different of "arty" shots. Which is a shame. I like what you have done here.
Adrian, thanks. The studio owner helped me with posing and setting up the group shots, so it helped speed up the girls. I did about 50 girls in 3 hours, which included some down time for wardrobe changes. And the owner wanted interesting poses, so that was a bonus.
These look really good, you have an ideal situation with the studio owner looking for creative vs standard shots too. I go back and forth on loving/hating the amount of light that splashes back on the subject - I think it's something only the photog cares about and clients don't though.
And you are right danmc, I try to control the splash back, but I'm not always successful. And you are also right that we care more about that detail than the clients do.
Marty, I like the simple poses too, especially for the young ones as sometimes they try to get them to do poses that are just too hard and don't look natural or pleasing, at least to my eye.
