A watermark is the only really effective deterrent.
Some people get all snotty about seeing them in images but i have had so many images used and stolen its the only way to at least offer some deterrent.
Not totally effective but hey what really is except not posting them at all..

Yeah, and you can always Print Screen on a Windows machine but it stops some folks.

As far as I know, none of my images have reached the status of being worth stealing.

I had the same sentiment with my personal work as well in the past but you'd be surprised how low people's standards can be and swipe it with few scruples. I'm surprised that highly respected photogs compare their work to mine.

Recently one person has copied my pictures apparently with the only purpose of aggravating me.
Well, I do not need such aggravation. Besides, I am not doing any business with my photography, therefore, I do not need to post any pictures at all, or I just post them very small.

Smart move padre. I generally avoid websites that are hot beds for image thieves. Really wish these image thieves would buy their own camera and take their own photos.

Hi Ron;

Thanks for starting this thread. I haven't read every post, but I want to comment on an observation concerning use of the built-in 1.4 extender and AFMA. Neither of my bodies (7D and 5D MkII) is able to save independent AFMA values for use w/ or w/o the built-in extender. However, it is possible to save separate AFMA settings when the lens is used with an external 1.4 extender (MkII). I am able to confirm that the built-in extender does degrade sharpness a bit (duh, what did I expect). Even so, this lens is so sharp that I'm willing to forgive it in this regard.

Here are some photos taken yesterday at the Nashville Zoo. All were taken with a 7D at 800 ISO. The small bird images were shot handheld, everything else was shot using a tripod with a gimbal mount. BTW, the lens balances beautifully on a gimbal mount.

Regards, ...Dave

BTW, the flamingo is a homage to Sallie Jo Perraglia, a regular on FM, who has some amazing flamingo images. Here are two tiger photos shot with built-in extender in place. There is a bit of softness compared to other images taken that day.

Hi Dave

Nice shots and thank you for sharing. Could it be that the shots with the TC in place are suffer more from higher ISO settings than actual softness issues. You did not provide ISO settings but it looks like there is more degradation because of the grain in the white tiger shot than softness. My 2 cents.

Hi Renier,

Everything was shot at 800 ISO. There is more noise, so that could be an exposure issue. Although I don't have an external light meter, the light on the cougar was about the same as the two tigers. I need to do some more work with the extender to see what's happening. Overall I'm very satisfied with the lens.

With all due respect to Dave, whom I do not know, I am pretty much baffled as to why folks look first at the optics rather than at the operator: skill levels, sharpness techniques, focusing accuracy, etc.

I too went to my local zoo to give mine a trial run abliet all hand held, with the occasional post used to steady it. Looking at the images later I found some difference with and without the 1.4 (and I am pixel peeping). Decided to run it through a test with Focus Tune last night at the 200 side with and without the 1.4X. and I found a difference in micro adjust settings between the two on my 1DX. I only tested it without on the 5D MKII since it wont save both settings, but I am going to run the tests again to see what the difference is. I haven't tested it at the 400 as I would need to run those tests outside where I can get a distance of 32 ft to the target.

Folks are invited to see my first posted 200-400 images here. They include a 100% crop of an image made at 560mm.

Hi Art;

I think we both agree the 200-400 is amazingly sharp for a zoom lens, even at 560mm. The point of my post was that there is a slight difference in AFMA setting (about +4 units) required to achieve critical focus with my equipment (a 7D) w/ and w/o the TC in place. Because the bodies I have are unable to save separate settings for the two modes, this may have some impact on sharpness in field use. I verified this using LensAlign and FoCal before heading off to the zoo. In retrospect, the two tiger shots aren't really that bad, but when viewed at full resolution on a calibrated monitor, they are just slightly off. The shots were taken on a tripod using a gimbal head at 1/30 sec @ F5.6 with the central focus point on the eye. Burningheart and I both seem to feel there can be a slight difference in AFMA w/ and w/o the TC in place. I have been corresponding with a friend and colleague in Australia who sees no difference when using his lens on a 1DX, so we are probably looking at differences in the quality of the AF systems. I don't know if it is possible for Canon to enable two AFMA settings for this lens, but use with an external TC is recognized by the 7D, and AFMA adjustments made accordingly.

I share your sentiments about the handhold capability of the 200-400. I'm a bit younger than you (by about 3 weeks), but I doubt that's a significant factor. The real test comes for me later this year when I go to Africa. Hopefully by then I'll have a shiny new 1DX to go with the 200-400.

All the best, ...Dave

Thanks Dave, Are you saying that with the 7D you can only MA for the 200-400 at 400 and not at 560?

Not exactly, Art. The 200-400 will report only a single lens ID to the body for AFMA, and it will be used whether or not the 1.4 extender is engaged. Perhaps this is something Canon can fix by an upgrade to the lens firmware. I'm going to pass this information along to a contact I have at Canon. This appears to be a limitation of older bodies (7D, 5DII). I don't have any experience with newer bodies (yet), but they apparently can be calibrated at both ends of the focal range.

...Dave

On this very forum I heard of a little 80 year old lady who attended a bird-flight photography seminar in the States, and upon "graduation" she was able to shoot 500 f/4 IS MkI (4 kg) handheld "all day". Just saying.

Art,

Are there differences in handholding the 500 ii vs the 200-400?

i read on birds as art blog, that you got tired of hand holding the 500 ii after 90 minutes or so. Do you feel you could do the 200-400 for this amount of time or longer? if so what are the differences between the two (balanced differently, etc)? I am curious to your thoughts as the 200-400 is one pound heavier than the 500 ii.

Thanks

jason

Aah, the perfect photo safari outfit. You're going to love the 1D X but remember to get it in good time so the two of you gets some quality time before you head off.

That's what everyone tells me. I'm going to sell the 5D MkII, keep the 7D (for extra reach, see images above), and get a new 5D MkIII and 1DX. I already have a decent lens lineup, now all I need is a porter to help carry it all. My wife doesn't know it yet, but she's been assigned the job <grin>.
