One warning about use:
Do not try to zoom while the zoom ring is tight - it causes wear on the gaskets.

Fully tight is surely bad to zoom it but how tight is too tight? Obviously the zoom ring was made adjustable for a reason. For tiny birds, where they fly in, up, wherever, I like to keep it about 1/4th tight. Tight enough that extending down or up wont collapse or telescope it right away.
I wonder what others do, and what the life expediency is on the gaskets when used 1/4th tight.
I think as long as you don't feel like you're forcing it, it's fine.
But logically, the tighter it is, the more wear-induced issues that will come up.

I've been wanting to buy the 100-400L but I know as soon as I buy one a new version will come out. Some reports on the internet indicate that they are field testing a new version now. Has anyone head this?
I love my 100-400L IS. If you wait for the new version, it will be significantly more expensive and will be hard pressed to justify the difference in my opinion, at least for the current cameras I own.
If your profile is accurate as to your gear, I don't think waiting and paying more for a new version will make much difference on a 7D.
