p.1 #1 · Canon 100-400L

I've been wanting to buy the 100-400L but I know as soon as I buy one a new version will come out. Some reports on the internet indicate that they are field testing a new version now. Has anyone head this?

No one on here will know anything more than the rumour sites. Rumours of the 100-400 II have been around for years. Probably better to just get the current one and enjoy it. And keep in mind that the new one will easily be priced at the $3000 mark or more.

Not worth waiting for the upgrade.

If you want to "insulate" yourself a bit from the price drop when and IF an new one comes out, buy Canon refurb (90-day warranty) or used from a reputable eBay seller or here. If the new one is worth upgrading, you can sell yours at a minimal or no loss.

yep a new 100-400 will be along at some point . but then again it may never be replaced

as mentioned above what you can be sure of is a new version will cost way more than the current one so unless you are prepared to drop double the cost of the current one then id go for it now . its a great lens .
i had one last year and loved it, there are the od drawback like the AF speed and very early gen IS (I never saw the push pull zoom as a drawback). i sold mine when a great deal on a sigma 120-300 came along , which for me is the better lens . but its much bigger which is a big drawback sometimes .

If you need one/want one now, just buy it. The longer you wait the less you will be able to use it. Plus the new one will mostly be almost double in price...which may actually send resale value of the "old" 100-400 up or stable it for awhile. The 500 f4 seems to be doing well if not better used after the 500 v2 came out (but thats a different and much more expensive horse).

Just buy it. I waited 3 years for the new one to come out and missed out on many nice photos because I didnt have the range.

The current one won't get worse if a new version comes out. It will just be not as new and cheaper.

For about $1100 you have a 100L 200L 300L and 400L all Image Stabilized, what more could you want

I have shot with at least three different 100-400L's, all of which have had great sharpness and great color! Also has close focusing.

Canonrumours claims a new 100-400 is currently exists and is being tested. Who knows...

No, it won't. And will you be willing to pay for a more expensive version?

Rumors of a new100-400 have been around for years now. There's no reason to believe this latest installment has any more validity than the last dozen.

Just purchase a used100-400. You can always turn around and sell it for little to no loss later.

Forget about waiting for 100-400 MkII.
Instead, I'd suggest that you wait for 400 f/5.6 IS.......the rumour has it that will be a ripper of a lens.

No one asked you to believe it CR does get some stuff right, it would be interesting if he was right this time. Unfortunately any 100-400 replacement will be at least 2 x the price of the current version. The good news it will be 5 x cheaper than the 200-400L! I agree, can't go wrong buying the current version

If Canon releases a new 100-400 at $3000-$3500 and discontinues the old one I can see used copies of the mk1 easily going up in price. $3K+ is a tough entry point for a lot of people in this economy.

I agree ^. Older super telephotos went up in price when the new ones were released. I could see the 100-400 getting more expensive too. You can find a nice used one for 1100 or so.

I agree with the comments above, don't wait. At least don't wait if you have a budget. The 100-400L is a decent lens but everyone is predicting a replacement that costs twice as much.

New 100-400L will come in at $2500. A run will be made on the old 100-400L which, normally plentiful in the used market, will suddenly become a commodity in very high demand with even well used copies commanding at least $1300 or more.

You heard it here first!

the reason the 100-400 has been around for so long is because the optics are so good. Canon can only upgrade the IS system and when they do that expect to pay $$$

I'd almost certainly expect better IQ to go along with better IS, AF, etc.

That said, I see no reason to wait when you can always recoup all your money on a resale if you decided to upgrade later.
