I see a lot of that mountain mirrored in a lake look, where the mountain in the background is reflected perfectly off a placid lake... how is this achieved? I imagine it is mostly done in post?

Not to be a smartass, but being at the right place at the right time--mostly.

This is usually captured in camera by taking advantage of knowing when there will be no wind or luck. Early morning is frequently calm and a great time to go out if the forecast is for low wind that day.

lol... i feel ya - i'm not a total greenhorn =). But so many of these images look like they've benefited from more in post than a perfect magic hour shot with optimal glass/settings/filtration etc etc

Your comment "I imagine it is mostly done in post" simply shows your lack of knowledge of basic photography and honestly, is somewhat of an insult to the many fine photographers here on FM. Morris' response was probably kinder than many would have given. A placid lake only happens one way, with NO WIND, and most photographers who want that look do indeed watch the forecast to determine if it will be conducive to such conditions.

Ugh... a forum troll! Well to be quite honest - I'm a video guy - with work on t.v. and published on national websites... so you can go flame somewhere else pal. To the people that were actually helpful and courteous... thanks for your time.

I find it more luck than anything. Watching weather reports helps, as does knowing the area (when it will be windy etc.) This is SOOC, handheld...just hopped out of the car on my honeymoon... I have not done any touch up on this image at all (which is why it is a little boring and flat)

Last one, probably the best from that day. Tiniest of breezes out made the water ripple. SOOC

Those are really pretty - and thank you very much for posting (i love these images). Some of the ones I've seen on the various blogs I pour over daily seem almost like they just polarized the reflection out... then mirrored the mountain image onto the water with some clever PS work. More investigation is required methinks - thanks for your help! Where precisely were these taken?

These were taken when I was on honeymoon in Europe. This particular lake is near the border between Germany and Austria.

Reason there is no post work on these is that there are many oil droplet spots on the sensor (you should be able to see them in the pictures, Nikon eventually fixed the issue, but it ruined most of my honeymoon pictures) and it would take to long to remove them all. Also, I forgot to turn on RAW, I think the camera was reset by accident and was only shooting JPG.

Similar to the mirrored mountain concept. Also SOOC: This is the Alpsee in southern Germany

Okay, so no mountains here, but figured I'd share. This is a shot from a dozen years that I did on 35mm film. I spent a few *months* getting up early most mornings to go outside and check the tide in the river until I found the optimal time to get the shot.
