p.1 #1 · Productive Day

I spent a few hours wandering around Sawhill Ponds in Boulder Colorado yesterday. I'm thinking about getting the Canon 800 f5.6 IS to improve my keeper rate. I have to wonder if Canon is going to release an 800 II anytime soon.

I hope you enjoy.

Beautiful set, Dean. My favorites are the Pewee images (a species with which I was not familiar) because of the exquisite detail and rich colors. (The barn swallow is pretty swell, also, although I might have tried to open up the shadows a bit). Overall, wonderful poses and great diversity. Thanks for sharing.

Greg

P.S. An 800 to INCREASE your keeper rate? (It would have the opposite effect for me!) Why not upgrade the 500 to a 500 ii?

I've found I can't get close enough to the subject with my 500. Obviously my technique is good considering the clarity of these images, but they are all extreme crops. An 800 would allow me to fill the frame with the subject.

I agree, the Pewee's are my favorite also, cute little bird.

Excellent work Dean, you did a marvelous job on these The are wonderfully sharp images with lots of fine detail. If I were you I would rent an 800 and see what you think, I think you'll be blown away by the IQ. Someone that creates images like these would really appreciate the sublime qualities that the 800 has over the 600 mk2. As to waiting for the 800 mk2, I wouldn't hold my breath, Canon is so far behind on production of better selling lenses at the current time

Your photos are fine, I like 4 the best.

An 800 II will likely set you back almost $20k. The thing is v1 already has 2 fluorite elements. You might get a lighter lens but little more in optical quality. Tim is right. Despite any rumors, the probably sell a handful of lens while the volume of shorter telephotos sell much more.

I wouldn't hold my breath waiting but who knows. However, plan on big money to buy one. Good luck and I like your work

Thanks for your input Tim. The 800 is a big expense, but since most of the shots I take are with the 1.4x attached, I feel I would benefit greatly. I really enjoy capturing these little guys, but getting close isn't an option. Getting this kind of sharpness and clarity is a real rush.

Thanks for your response. Number 4 does show a certain amount of cockiness... it's hard to be tough when you are no bigger than a random thought.

I haven't heard any rumors of a second generation 800, but since it has been 5 years since it's release, the possibility is there.

Read
Here but take with a grain of salt purely because of the lack of economies of sale. Also note the lack of real change in optical formula.

This is definitely food for thought. I don't find the idea of a built in 1.4x too appealing and since the optical formula will be nearly identical, all the more reason to make the purchase soon. Maybe there will be a price drop with the announcement of a successor.

Thanks Morris! I'm finding the smaller the critter, the more reach necessary.

Thanks Randy! After I got home and processed the images, it took me some time to identify the Pewee. I had never seen one before.
