p.1 #1 · First Outing With D7100

This past weekend was the first chance I had to take the D7100 out for a spin. I was at the Alligator Farm in St. Augustine, FL and spent a couple of days there. I am still trying to get used to the camera coming from a D300. For BIF's the buffer issue didn't bother me as much as I thought it would. The viewfinder is a lot brighter and nicer than the D300 and the AF seems to be a little faster but it's too early for me to tell how much different than the D300. I mainly used the camera with the Nikon 300mm f/4. As with any camera it's all about the images and I do notice more detail but I also see more noise, even at ISO 400, when I blow the images up. Taking the camera out again this weekend and will keep trying to become more familiar with it.

These images look great.
I have more or less the same experience with the D7100, except for noise. My biggest grief with the D300(s) was the noise (already at ISO100).

Very nice shots Steve. I thought I was the only one who noticed more noise with my D7100. Still not totally used to the camera so it could just be me, but at 800 iso mine seems almost as noisy as my old D2x.

You guys should note which raw conversion program that you are using to make sure that is not the issue, assuming that you shoot in raw.

Also... you have to be careful to separate out per-pixel noise between cameras of differing resolutions.

On higher and higher MP bodies, especially for wildlife, it's easy to start cropping the heck out of these photos and then analyzing them compared to other camera bodies - when that's not a real comparison. If, per-pixel, the noise is the same as a 12mp sensor, then you're actually getting a really big reduction in the overall noise of the sensor since you're either getting twice the megapixels in an identical noise profile, or downsizing to 12mp will result in a big noise reduction.

For me I shoot in RAW and use LR4 for processing.
