1. Lioness in the dense brush. About 30 feet away. And looking at us. Gulp. Five strides and a leap would do it.
2. Leo in the open... sorta . Our van was just like their's- except all our windows were open.
It took me a couple of days to trust that we could get very close to lions and they wouldn't attack- even when all our windows and the pop-top were open
Put another way- I NEVER trusted that they wouldn't attack.
But they never did during our dozen or so sessions with them. Hooray!
3 and 4. The Maasai village- a group of boys- apparently old enough to NOT need an adult with them all the time. But they were still within the thorn bush protective walls of the village. I'm sure they never go outside the "gate" without adult supervision.

You are very lucky you didn't pull that sorcerers trick and make their colors disappear with them watching or we would have seen the last of you
Trust me Charlie, you are not on the menu..that's what the textbook says....now just hope the lions read the same book. Man eating lions are rare...or is it the people who are rare...or raw! I forget but I'm sure, pretty sure , I mean I guess they are more afraid of us than we of them...something about fire sticks. Oh yeah....see the asterisk? This doesn't apply after dark and national holidays and any day ending in a "Y".., feel better?

Nice set Charlie,

I understand they don't see you as individuals but as huge animals not to be eaten in the vehicles. But I don't know if I believe that either. After all, who hasn't seen the footage of them jumping in to trucks & jeeps etc.....

Got to be brave in such situations I guess.... You're lucky to have been able to experience this.

Thanks Eric, Randy and Lil.
I'm just a normal person about such things: don't jump out of perfectly good airplanes, don't walk in the path of moving vehicles, etc.
When it comes to semi-risky things that are necessary if I want to experience certain adventures- well, then I'm willing to take calculated risks- especially when I'm with experts whom I trust. In such cases, my brain tells me the risks are minimal; although my emotions might be asking the question: "What the ...?"
Watching lions from up close with the van windows open was like that.
So was 2-weeks rafting through the Grand Canyon in an 18-foot raft without a motor- just oars. And a skilled rafter handling them. As a non-swimmer, I probably had more excitement than the others .

Very nice set, Charlie! I really like the play of light and darks in the first shot which adds the right drama to the image
A story telling the second shot
I like the B&W version of the last shot. Too bad I cannot see who is wearing the shoes in that one

Thanks, Socrate.
I thought about lightening the first shot- then decided I liked the contrast because of the sense of mystery it might convey... so I actually increased the contrast a bit.
The more I look at the second shot the more I realize how vulnerable all us safari touri were around lions. Those other folks are looking for the lion- but haven't spotted him yet. And he was walking towards them.
Shoes? You want to see shoes and feet? Hey Socrate- you know I don't like to include no stinking feet in my pictures! .
