p.1 #1 · I have a stupid question

I know I should have read the manual more thoroughly before now, but I didn't. So at the risk of ridicule , am going to ask so that I can learn.
I was shooting with the d7000 , was not using AF-ON
Recently switched to D800, use AF-On and absolutely love it.

I was reading the manual to the 500mm f/4 it states:

"If you set AF start (AF-ON) button to ON on the camera or the focus operation button on the lens, vibration reduction will not operate."

So, on with the stupid question- Must I go back to using the shutter button for focus in order for VR to work? If I set the lens switch to the neutral position, can I use the AF-ON and have VR work?

So, all these weeks with the D800 and the VR has not been working because I have the AF-On set on the camera? Might explain some of the issues I started having with the lens. Talk about feel stupid.

I think the current generation cameras now activate the VR on the lenses even when using the AF-ON button.. So you should be ok to continue using the AF-ON.

However I am going to let somebody with the current generation bodies confirm this as I still shoot with a D700

Stop reading manuals and put the lens on the camera and see what happens, sort of like Grant is going to do...

Enjoy the camera, look forward to seeing a few images.

I don't know if the AF-ON will activate VR/OS/VC etc or not with newer bodies but you can autofocus with the AF-ON and use the shutter button to activate VR, lock exposure, and then release the shutter. That's the way I do it with a D300.

That's what I get for reading a manual !

I don't have the 500, only the lowly 300, but on my d800 the AF-on button activates the VR. I'm pretty sure either button activates it but I'm headed to bed and too lazy to put it all together to double check right now.
Man, the cropping power of the d800 with a 500. Ah, maybe someday....

The VR will activate on a 500mm VR with a D800 when the AF-ON button set to activate focus and is depressed.

I own both and have been using it extensively this past month or so.

Cheers!

Hey Birdie! Your 500 lens manual was written BEFORE the release of the new kids onna block...
D4/D800/D600/D7100. They ALL now activate VR from the AF-ON (AE-L/AF-L) button. your
D7K only activated VR with a shutter 1/2 depress and if you're like me, got used to this
way of doing business...same way with my tried 'n true D3/D700/D2Xs etc. Wish Nikon
would make a switchable option via firmware, this old dog hates learnin' new tricks.

Thanks guys for clarifying this for me ! As you can tell I was quite confused by what the manual was saying.

Will, thank you - This ole dog gets very confused when trying to learn something new also

I really appreciate all the replies that explained this to me. I am learning quite a bit from you guys. I'm sure there will be more stupid questions in the future . Will, thanks for replies on the cafe as well
