p.2 #1 · Ricoh GR my 1st gallery

Mitch, hope all is well with you.
I will do a little digging and find it for you.

...almost there...

Takes a lot of Google translating. It was a Japanese site with someone who was at one of the "GR Experience and Live Talk" events that were held about a week ago. I have found a few from the same event and I sort of recognize the "starting page" but finding the exact page proved harder than I thought.

http://www.dmaniax.com/2013/05/11/gr-talk-talk/

I am pretty sure it was from one of the links from this page, I am sifting through them:

EDIT: link not displayed correctly and removed.

They mentioned Daido, the GR and a project of documenting a major city which I can't recall (Osaka?) and they were going to be printing "large". I speed read the part about Daido and it was a Google translate page so finding it has proved difficult. Haven't given up just yet though!

After reading a few google translated pages I feel I am losing my own grasp of English...

It would be nice to eventually get some side by side with a GR vs NEX-6 w/ 20mm pancake. I would think size-wise, they will be close.

There are some comparisons with the Nikon A already. This is quite a close comparison, so maybe you can extrapolate from that?

Um, about twice as thick I guess? The height and length seems to be similar.

Interesting stuff - thanks. I think the the most important competitor image quality wise would be the Sigma DP! Merrill...

The DP Merrill's are much larger and, due to their slow AF, high noise at anything faster than base ISO and slow write/ shot to shot time, would likely not be seen as a direct competitor to the GR. The GR will end up being a much more versatile camera while the DP Merrill may have a slight edge in perhaps one specific situation (base ISO, daylight, relatively static subject matter). It will be interesting to see how both compare with similar processing in that case.

I agree about the DP Merrill. I considered it, but the slow AF, write speed, poor high ISO, and raw processing difficulties ruled it out for me. I would love to try out the Foveon look, but handling is just as important to me as IQ. To me, the closest competitor to the GR is the Coolpix A and X100s. Coolpix A for size, X100s for AF speed.

Coolpix A has the menu system I am familiar with, support for GPS, pictbridge, and support for Nikon flashes. Ricoh has a better lens, faster AF, built-in ND filter, supposedly better B&W, and a lower price. In the end, I decided the handling (AF and ability to use ND filter) on the GR was better so I preordered it. Somehow, I do not believe Nikon can keep the Coolpix A at the current price. I think it would be unbelievable hubris if Nikon thinks they can charge a premium for what many think is an inferior camera, just based on the brand. It'll be interesting to see if Sony enters. Based on the RX1 and RX100, it'll probably be a very good product.

I don't think either of these cameras are very pocketable. I tried putting the Coolpix A into my jean pocket at a local store. It was very snug and I worried about the built-in lens cover accidentally opening and getting the lens scratched.

Two battery systems. Two different chargers. Two different controls. Sigma really needs to improve the usability of their cameras. If you're going to live with the slower handling of the DP2M, you might be better off just coupling that with a DP1M.

I thought the two battery systems are compatible, or am I mistaken?

I just assumed they were different since one is Ricoh and the other is Sigma. I just looked on BH's site, and they sure do look the same. Perhaps they are compatible.

It's hit or miss on the battery compatibility. The reason is that, while the form factor is the exact same, the Sigma batteries have a deeper cut notch into the battery casing which will prevent some of the Ricoh batteries (at least with a few third party versions I tried) from fitting into the DP Merrills without modification.

So if the third party battery is specifically made for Sigma it should fit GR then?

And then there is also the Sigma viewfinder, anyone used it or have compared it with the CV one?

That should be the case regarding third party Sigma BP-41 batteries, though there are not a lot of third party options being advertised as being compatible (I believe maybe one on ebay, none domestically).

Thanks, Henrik. I did a Google search in Japanese for "リコー GR 森山大道 2013" and found the following:

http://dc.watch.impress.co.jp/docs/news/20130417_596344.html

If you put that through Google Translate, you'll see a section on Moriyama Daido having participated in a Pentax-Ricoh presentation and discussion of the GR on 17 April in Tokyo. It states that he liked the camera's responsiveness: he seems to be saying that it's comparable in speed, size and convenience, and appropriate for his type of street photography, to the film GR cameras. ("Film camera" is "silver salt camera" in the translation"). The article also states that he'll have a large photo exhibition, with large prints, in Okinawa in January 2104, for which he'll start shooting seriously in Okinawa in May with the GR.

Incidentally, the translation of Google Translate has improved a lot: Moriyama Daido's name for which the kanji characters are "mountain-forest great-way" used to be translated as "Mr. Forest Boulevard" instead being transcribed as "Moriyama Daido".

I'm completing a five-week stay in Paris and returning to Bangkok on 1 June. I tried the new GR some days ago at a shop on the Boulevard Beaumarchais called L'Instantané. Marcel, the owner, is a great Ricoh GRD fan personally and my understanding is that he'll be receiving the largest shipment in Europe of the new GR. He's a very nice guy and I can recommended him if you are looking for this camera. I have no commercial ties to him whatsoever. I had gone to the Maison du Leica shop some 50 meters and way and dropped in to see him. I was somewhat in a hurry and his shop was full, so I spent only five minutes walking shooting with the camera in the street. It's great handling camera, with fast autofocus in good light — I didn't try AF in low light. I've been shooting with the M-Monochrom from last November to January, and since February with the M9-P. Being able to shoot one-handed with the new GR, was like a home-coming to my feelings of shooting with the GRD.

As I was rushed, I did not notice that the camera was set to JPG only, so I ended up not having any DNGs. The black and white JPGs have a very good tonality and are excellent at ISO1600. The color seems good: for my taste, just needing a slight contrast increase, but I cannot say any more than this.

I'm very tempted to get it when I get back to Bangkok. But I must say that these days I'm hung up on color: I love the color rendition of the M9 and, so far, have been looking skeptically at what's coming out of the M240 in this respect. Basically, my feeling is, as a photographer on LUF stated, that the M9 color rendition is more like that of color slide film while that of CMOS-sensor cameras, possibly including the M240, is more like color negative film. Yes, the critical thing may be the CFA and color model used and not whether the camera has a CCD or CMOS sensor, but I want to see what sort of color rendition the new GR has from DNGs before I decide whether to get one. But, in terms of handling and suitability for B&W street photography it seems like a fabulous camera.

Hello Mitch

That was the very page I was frantically trying to find for you, I am not as well versed in Asian languages as you. Good find.

I actually look forward to the GR, I think it will finally be the digital replacement for the Ricoh GR V I had years and years ago. After browsing some more samples I am quite certain it will be up to par with my expectations for a pocket buddy. It will probably be "just like" having the GR V again, albeit with the convenience of digital and better high ISO performance.

I hope to come back to Bangkok one of these days - it's been too long. Both me and Jenny didn't make it over last year and this year is whizzing by very fast. I came very close to a spontaneous trip to BKK a month ago, but then I sprained my ankle pretty bad and got chained to the home for two weeks with limited mobility. Up and running again and trying to catch up with work that has been piling up (literally) on me.

Good to hear that you are still traveling around frequently.
All the best to you,
Henrik

Last Thursday the Miami Heat went ahead to win double back NBA Championships and I was hired to shoot an event at one of Miami’s most exclusive night clubs ― the majestic FIFTY Ultra Lounge Miami at Viceroy . . . . . Folks please, don't let the GR be stereotyped as a street photography camera only, its not, its the best all around compact bar none !!
