I like m4/3 but I don't think the size has much to do with it. A 7d with no grip doesn't seem like it would bethat big to me. My xt was smaller than 30d/40d though

Well neither is the the 5D3 without grip. Until you put them side by side. It's all incremental. Which is why I went for the absolutely smallest that they make.
With this camera being considered "compact" (at least by DSLR standards) I wonder if the 70-300 DO would be a good match. I know it's not that great a lens but thinking how it could keep the kit small.
That and the 18-55 might make a relatively light travel setup.
I used to have a 70-300DO and I'm not ashamed to admit that I loved it: I think it would be a good match for the SL1. When the price drops I plan to get the SL1 and marry it to my 70-300L. Yes, I know- I'm strange.
I had the 70-300mm DO lens before and it was a decent lens. Frankly, if you really want a fairly light travel setup, I would get the 55-250mm "cheap" but great zoom lens.
My favorite lens for this camera so far is the 40mm f/2.8 STM pancake lens. The camera and lens combo is really compact and it looks like a point-and-shoot camera. I have taken a fair amount of images of my grandchildren using that lens but they are more for personal usage although I am very pleased with the results. I took that combo to my favorite sushi joint tonight and snapped a few shots. Here are two samples that I took using a Voigtlander close-up lens (from my Ultron days) on the pancake.

You don't like fish, Stan? It has a lot of Omega 3 and it is good for you .
Yeah, that's what the wife keeps saying. For that reason I keep drinking what we now refer to as "fish milk", i.e. whole milk with added Omega-3 in it. The best thing about it: it doesn't taste like fish

I guess it's just 2nd nature to me as I usually carry the camera like that pretty much regardless of what it is - 1DX with 28-300...
I still don't see the benefit in the SL1 over a Rebel though, maybe 100 grams
155g. Or 41%. And size difference. Same irrelevant size and weight difference as 6D vs. 5D3 - some people pick it for that reason, even if they can afford the bigger sibling. I guess it's like going through the options list when buying a new car: it's just a tiny difference from one to the next, but when you add it all up, you end up with the 1DX

Me neither. My Rebel XT is small enough in my hand it gives me cramps and this is even smaller.

For me it would be interesting as part of a superlight landscape setup - pair up with a 10-22mm and a CF tripod and you have an extremely light and capable setup to take along where weight is an issue.

I'm very interested in the SL1 and will probably buy one. I prefer it over a Rebel. Together with the kit lens and my Voigtländer 40 & 90 lenses it would be a great and small setup.
And I'm with Stan when it comes to carrying the camera. I have not even unpacked my straps for all my 1 series bodies. I can use a hand-strap but never a strap around my neck

No I hate camera straps, especially the wide Canon ones that come with cameras, I haven't unpacked mine either
I use a small camera bag and a simple wrist strap on every body so if it falls out of my hand it won't hit the floor.
I would never carry any camera around by it's lens, unless it was a super tele, apart from anything else I'd sweat all over the lens barrel

Lars, I've been eyeing the Voigtlander 20 pancake for this camera. I think you have one, what do you think? 32 mm equivalent FOV, 1 inch thick, and 7 oz. And it could replace the bulk of the 17-40 for my 5D when traveling. Seems perfect, no?

Jeff,
I don't have the 20. I own the Voigtländer 40 and 90 lenses. The 20 is less good than the others. And the 90 APO lens is extremely good and small.
