My US dealer says that they expect a few copies of the 200-400 around the 29th of this month. Since I pre ordered way back when (Feb 7th, 2011), I am very hopeful that I will get an early copy.
For those of you that have used it on other Canon version II supertelephotos, what are your thoughts on the Really Right Stuff replacement foot. RRS is listing the same foot as compatable with the 200-400, and I likely should order one. I do need a full length foot with a wide balance range for use on a gimbal mount, so the 4th Generation Designs' CR-80 foot is not suitable at all.
If you haven't realized it yet, Canon will save you a few $$ when you buy 200-400L.
There are several accessories which are being shared between the new lens and some others, such as:
(1) The hood is interchangeable with 300 f/2.8 IS and 400 DO (Slightly different shade of white but it fits).
(2) The Don Zeck's front cap for 300 f/2.8 IS, 200 f/2 IS, and 400 DO also fits 200-400L. So does the Lenscoat hoodie.
(3) Because of the standard tripod mount foot flange template, all kinds of replacement feet are compatible with 200-400L, at least in theory.
(4) Any 500 f/4 IS bag will take 200-400L nicely, albeit with a bit more room to spare.
You see, and we thought Canon wasn't considerate of our pocketbooks.

Happy Birthday Peter. Will next years Birthday present be a 800L MKII.
Thank you, Robert. Yes, that is what we need....... 800L MkII priced at $19,000.
At the same time, used 800L MkI can't sell on B&S Board even at $10,000 these days.

Thank you, Nils. I can wait for my 200-400L to get delivered sometime this or next month. Until then, I have a long lens or two to tie me over in my photography endeavours .

Peter, I don't know why, but it puts a smile on my face thinking of you getting the 200-400 after all!
Haha... away for a few days, so belated birthday wishes Peter! I see two years of skepticism about this lens wasn't enough to douse your curiosity for a hands-on evaluation. Looking forward to your findings and hope to add mine as well.
My point of reference for this lens is the 400 IS v.1. Hopefully it will be close in optical quality, if not better.

Thank you, Ron. I just can not help it: my expectations on that lens are not very high, but I sure hope its IQ wide open and AF are not worse than my 400 f/5.6.
A bit like the long lead time of the Super two's i think this lens is going to blow people away.
Ca nt wait to play with one next week in Tokyo and hopefully bring one home.
It may not mean much to birders but the flexibility to finally not lose hi quality full frame images because a wingtip or tail is cut off will be priceless.
The number of great shots i have missed swapping from the 800 or 500 to the 100-400 is long and distinguished.
Looking at the mtf's it looks every bit the part..im excited by he possibilities this lens opens up.
While awaiting review, I'd advise all interested to start collection.
The TC test was priced at $50.00, but this will be more. I'd suggest $500.00 : -)
This will somewhat soothe the buyer's pain.

I got a call from "my" camera store today. They said they were getting three 200-400Ls, two had been spoken for already, and they thought that I might have been interested in the remaining one. So I ordered it.
Now I have to go from one to another family member of mine, with a hat in my hand, begging for contributions towards the lens purchase cost.
I am also hoping that I will be able to sell my 200-400L evaluation report on line, as that would also help mitigate the $$ blow of the purchase.
You must be doing something right in your marriage Peter!
You seriously could sell your evaluations.
I am pretty suprised you are buying one so soon (or at all) but I am happy for you!

Better late then never Peter....Happy Birthday! Yet another 39th birthday. I've lost count.
Thank you, Morley....truthfully, at my age birthdays are hideous affairs....can't figure it out how is that I have piled up all these years so quickly ?

It's not all gravy, Mike, there has been a price to pay: in the past 2-3 years I can't remember having anything else for dinner except hotdogs and peanut butter sandwiches

That's quite the odd pairing for a meal
Perhaps in addition to a review contribution we should include a variety of snack foods of a nutritional nature. Organic dark chocolate, non-sulfured dried fruits, perhaps even a non-dairy protein drink mix, you must keep your strength up to manage a proper 200-400 eval. You will require another liquid source as well, but only after shooting has ended, to ease your upper body fatigue. I think a bottle or two of some grape based solution is required, will a SoCal Napa Valley sampling help cleanse thy pallet of the lingering dog n pbutter bliss
