Great find and captures Tom...A rare opportunity of these secretive fellows. I have yet to see one.

Hi tinyfishy,

I hope you get to see one soon. It's nice to get lucky every now and then.

Sounds like a plan, Tom! I only questioned the ID as an educational point for myself. I'm as into the birding side of things as I am the photography, so any chance I find to learn about identification, I take it, especially on infrequently seen species. For what it's worth, I had a friend look at this bird who is far more experienced with these than I am, and he thought it was definitely a Clapper; that said I'm waiting to hear what the Rail doctorate says about it!

Ryan

Hi Ryan,

I'm glad you questioned it. The 'Rail-man' said the long, thin bill, gray extending to the neck, and the dusky chest band (plus dull orange belly) all seem like Clapper Rails to him. He also indicated there must have been some saltwater intrusion in this area.

Thanks for putting it out there.

You're welcome, Tom! I try to watch the bird posts here closely. I think I've got a little more experience from the birding side than a lot of the members (no implications to this particular post--that King/Clapper Rail is a somewhat difficult distinction, especially because they're such secretive birds), and I generally feel like people appreciate it if an ID is corrected. It's never meant as a knock on anyone--just an educational experience for us all! Thanks for checking up with the local experts!
