I have a Zeiss 21 and a Nikon 50/1.8g. I am looking for something in between.
Reviews of the Sigma 35 1.4 are REALLY good - I love all the pictures I have seen on the forum using it - makes my mouth water! But in looking at older reviews/comments on the Nikon 28 1.8g everyone seems to have been thrilled with it too. Both are within the same price range (Nikon a little cheaper) so that is not really a overriding consideration. And the difference between a 1.4 and 1.8 is not really that significant (most of the time).
What I want to know is, if you were going to buy a new lens in this range, which of the 2 above would you buy? Now don't just say you are looking at 2 different focal lengths - I know that! I also know that with the 28, I can crop to a 35 - and not vice versa. What I am trying to get a feel for is, in general, which gives a better IQ, is sharper, more 3D, better bokeh, etc. Give me your thoughts!
I own both and I love both equally. For street and travel 28/1.8 is preferred because it is lightweight. For events work I take always Sigma. If I'll have to get rid of one I'll be in trouble... but most probably I'll keep Sigma.
So you guys think I would be better off with the Sig 35 than the Nikon 28 1.8g. Interesting!
I own the Nikon 35/1.4 and I am seriously thinking about selling it and getting the either the Nikon 28 or the Sigma 35 - it is not that I don't like the Nikon - just the money - can swap a used Nikon 35 for a new Sigma 35 and pocket several hundred $ and perhaps have a better lens in the deal.
Thanks for everyone's input. Will get on this by the weekend.
Swapping the Nikon 35mm for the Sigma is an obvious decision. The Sigma trumps the Nikon in every way.
Of course I'll get flamed for saying that by some of the Nikon 35mm owners, but apart from weather sealing the Sigma is superior, and significantly cheaper.
You will NOT be disappointed if you buy the Sigma. My thread with nearly 500 posts and 90k views confirms this.
I am making this same decision. I prefer the 35mm focal length for general purpose shooting but the Sigma is 1/2" longer and almost 1 lb heavier. That is a significant difference in weight and the Nikon 28 while not up to the Sigma performance seems to be very capable. Tough decision.
I was trying to make the same decision and opted for the Sigma 35mm. It's looks like such an amazing lens. I think 28 will be just a bit too wide for what I want to capture (street, photojournalistic wide open). I want more bokeh and sharpness at 1.4. The Sigma should do well!
