p.1 #1 · Sling camera strap question

I have been using a Blackrapid strap attached to the tripod foot of my Nikon 300 f/4 + 1.7TC on a D7000 body, slung over my left shoulder, for walking and taking hand-held shots. The camera and lens sort of rest on my right hip, and it's very comfortable - except that it bounces around and keeps hitting my hip when I'm walking, and the wide part of the strap keeps working forward off my shoulder onto my chest - even when the strap is properly adjusted and shortened. If there is a similar type of strap that also incorporates some kind of belt or loop to go around the waist and stop the camera/ lens from bouncing, it would be an improvement. I have seen several mentions of this type of product on the web, but does anyone have any recommendations for one that really works well?

Thanks, Richard

I have given up on my black rapid strap for the exact same reason. I have ordered a Luma Cinch 2 strap and am waiting for it to be delivered. I read this thread and found it helpful. You might also want to check the official Luma Labs website here.

I had a similar issue with the camera sliding forward when bending down when using a sling strap. You can try using a carabiner and another quick attach clasp to attach it to a beltloop. It helps snug the camera down and prevent it from sliding too much.

I have since switched to the first generation of the Luma Cinch strap. The quick adjust nature of the strap allows me to pull the camera tight when moving. The neoprene in the shoulder pad is springy and absorbs some of the bounce when walking. The strap operates differently than a sling type in that the shoulder pad moves back off the shoulder when the camera is up to the eye.

The Cinch does take two points of attachment- I have mine attached to the left strap attach point on the camera and the tripod socket via an extender. I've heard of people using a CustomSLR C-Loop to attach to a threaded socket, which is likely the preferred solution when attaching to a lens collar. (My largest lens is a 70-200 which I try to carry lens down as often as possible on the strap.)

One more solution- the Cotton Carrier vest has a velcro strap that can be used to hold a lens in place. You could try to make a belt attachement that does something similar to hold the lens in place.

I use a new design called the Pho-Reel and Pho-Reel Plus. It’s a modular design with a chest strap and suspends from an asymmetrical shoulder strap with a push button reel with a vinyl coated steel cable, and a snap ring that either mounts to a plate under the camera or between the camera and tripod plate, or lens ring, or through the camera strap loops including the recessed one. It’s not leaning against your hip so it isn’t bouncing with walking movement and eliminates the pendulum issues. Too many other features to list! http://bit.ly/15I0CzQ
