Remove the battery and the coin cell battery (if it has one). Remove any memory card(s). Wait a few hours. Put the coin cell battery back in, then the main battery in that order.
If the problem is intermittent or happens again, try updating or just reloading the firmware (even if it's the same version).

Error 30 doesn't necessarily mean a bad shutter. I was getting occasional Error 30's on my 7D. The repair slip I got back from Canon had a very vague "the part was not properly connected causing intermittent errors". Not quite sure what they did, but its been fine ever since. Cost was $126, but that was a few years ago.

Scenario is very simple:
Error 30, Asked me to power off and remove battery. After that camera never come back to life, tried 2 original, 100% charged battery.
Any way I can mitigate the problem without sending it to Canon ?
I think mine had error 30 and asked me to do same thing - take battery out, take a few shots lock up repeat, then lock up permanently, although it did stay powered on. Turned out to be failed mirror box.

Thank you guys for suggestions ! I've tried to remove everything and leave it for long time without batteries - no luck. One last chance to get new CR1616 and replace old one, hoping that no power in CMOS battery causing the problems.

My 7d had this problem also. A quick research on the Internet revealed a "fix".
Turn the camera upside down, give it a nice whack with the palm of your hand. I did it, got me though the day! I sent it in to Canon the day after and they said there was a broken solder connection on the shutter mechanism. They resoldered it, and it's been fine ever since.

I will give it a try! BTW I've replaced CR1616, didn't help. Also how much you've paid for this repair ?

You know my computer failed to boot one day and could not get it back on and after tearing my hair out and thinking it was power supply, cpu, gpu, etc, it turned out to be the lowly CMOS battery on the MB. Was 5 years old; new battery and all was 100% fine again.

My early model 7D did the same thing, it would power down and I could not get it to power up again. After five or six trips to Canon they admitted that they couldn't figure it out and gave me a new body. The new one has worked flawlessly so far.

I kept getting error 30 on my 7d when using live view and occasionally when shooting normally through the view finder. From what I've found on google it seems that the error is consistent with a sticking shutter and not necessarily one that is failing. My personal experience seems to match that as some of the frames when error was occurring have black bands in them or are completely black or white.
The last time mine froze up I did a quick (and uncomfortable feeling) fix by whacking the bottom of camera pretty hard against palm of my hand. Its run flawlessly ever since I've read of several other photographers doing the same and having good luck with it fixing the problem. Smack your camera around at your own risk......
