p.1 #1 · EF 24mm f1.4L, Original or Mark II, Differences?

For more years then I care to mention a Canon nFD 24mm f2.0 was one of my most used wide angle lens. Now my only 24mm focal length is within my zooms; 10-22, 17-40L and 24-85; perhaps the 24-105 when a 6D or 5D3 is picked up.

Having used 'L' glass for a few years, spoiled I be. I've thought about the new EF 24 f2.8 IS and it's a possibility, but I'm also interested in hearing from those FMers who have used or currently use either of the 24 f1.4L's. I've read the reviews for each lens; the original and Mark II, and am wondering if the Mark II is indeed a better performer.

City/landscapes, perhaps flora; maybe even an adventure or two with extension tubes, will be the subject matter/usage; there may be some video involved, but I doubt any night sky/star imagery; I normally shoot sunrise to sunset. The 24mm FL is for me a sweet spot, much like the 100 macro is, and although I've a 28 f1.8 the extra width of the 24 is more to my liking. Any suggestions, recommendations, sample images would be most appreciated...

Thanks,
Jerry

The mk2 is clearly better. It's the first lens of Canon's new generation of lenses, all of which have a particular look to them. Every L lens that came after it, including some non-Ls, share the same look.

The mk2's picture is very even across the frame. The mk1 had a very nice center, but had pretty bad and steep falloff to the edges. That's fixed now.

I had the mk1 since it came out and it was my favorite lens. The mk2 is a worthy sequel to that.

The Digital Picture has a side-by-side comparison of both, and the MKII is clearly better.

Echo Stan's comments and add that the mark II has less CA and is weather sealed. Sounds like you are shooting crop and this lens is really great for that too.

I just bought a mk ll version last week (used) but have only taken 1 shot so far but it's nice to hear that I made a good decision. Up till now the shallow DOF side of photography never interested me but last winter it started me thinking so I'm heading down a new road this summer. I've relied so heavily on zooms over the years that I keep trying to zoom the 2 primes I've recently bought. (the other is the 35 f1.4 L)

On a 24mm f/1.4 is a must IMO and even then I'd prefer f/1.0-1.2. It's almost impossible to get truly shallow DoF unless you move in close with a 24mm.

I love my 24L mk I. I researched it a lot before I bought and as much as the mk2 is truly a noticeably better lens I felt the extra cost was too much for me. They are both great but the mk2 is 'more great'. I like it on both a crop and FF.

The 24L f1.4 Mk 1 had crippling chromatic aberration, the Mk2 is dramatically better in this respect. The Mk2 is a stunning lens.
