p.1 #1 · Am I crazy to want to trade my 70-200VRII for VRI
I am not familiar with Nikon 70-200VRI. I don't know exactly the difference between the two. I am trying to cut down on unnecessary expenses and focus on photography.
I just sold my 105VR and replaced it with 60f/2.8D and 85/1.8G. If I sell my 70-200VRII I will replace it with VRI and 24-120VR f/4. I only use my 70-200 for weddings and runway model sometimes.

It's whatever works for you. Sounds like you have a plan. Lens choice is highly personal. I do suggest finding your "Go To Lens" (the one you know you can always count on for a good shot) and never remove that from your arsenal. never

crazy, yes...assuming you have FX..?? or unless the couple hundred extra bucks diff is super important to you..haven't used a VRI but have the II and my understanding is that it improved some issues on FX, vignetting or something

You are so right about Go To Lens. With Canon my go to was 70-200VRII and 50L but with Nikon I am still struggling to figure the lenses out. My go to lens now is Sigma 35/f1.4. That lens is just too good to be true.

70-200 VRII & Sigma 35 1.4 is a killer combo for most shooting styles, particularly weddings. Both are as good as it gets so I highly recommend keeping the VRII. Maybe add a 24-120 f/4 later?

for shooting people i don't think i would hesitate. all you loose is some corner sharpness and that is no biggie in your case. I'm more than happy with my 70-200mm VRI for people. Mine is quite sharp where i need it to be.
That being said it's pretty awful for landscapes as it never sharpens up in the corners, especially on the D800. for that i have the 70-200mm f4 VR.

Totally agree. Its my fave lens by a long way. My 200/2 makes me drool but the Siggy makes me gush

To me, the main thing I noticed is the vignetting of the VR1 model on the newer bodies. As others have mentioned that may not be much of a factor with the people/wedding shots. Is your intent to then also use the 24-120mm at weddings if you got it? It's a good lens, and I use my 24-120mm quite a bit.

The VRI was designed in the era of the crop frame sensor; corners are amazingly mushy on FF bodies for subjects at distance, if that matters for your type of shooting. See Lloyd Chambers' review of this lens.
Again, it may not matter at all for your type of shooting. But it does reduce the utility of the lens for other purposes.

You will miss the focus breathing of the VRII.

Sound like a plan since cash is not really the issue.
p.1 #15 · Am I crazy to want to trade my 70-200VRII for VRI
I can think of one reason to switch to the Version I, and several not to. Reason to switch? Focus breathing. It's real and impactful on the version II. (It also does not bother me, and in fact is sometimes an accidental advantage).
Reasons to stay with the version II: As mentioned before, FF coverage. Also, and call me nuts, I like the image rendering much better. I can't analyze the reason, just think it "pops" a bit more. Maybe more contrasty, dunno.
Now the biggie. I post this from time to time, because it drove me nuts. I had (and eventually sold) the version I. I was shooting sports, and with the 1.7 TC the images were soft, just awful. I pushed myself hard to improve my technique (all the reviews commented favorably on the lens+TC pairing. Must be ok, right?). Then I found this. I guess it was not just me.
I have shared this before, and judging from conflicting user responses, I get the impression that the problem might be specific to some instances of the version I lens, but not others. Anyway, I replaced mine with the vII and never looked back.

Both 70-200's are FX lenses.
Fair enough, sorry, I meant to say *better* FF coverage (sharper in corners, as previously noted). My sloppiness there.

What camera are you using? Keep the VII, if you shoot a D800, D3s or D4. Nano lens coating, improved VR, and improved optics are reasons to keep the lens.
Could you explain what it is about the VRII that seems different than the Canon 70-200 IS? I shoot the VRIi just like I shot the VRI.

You will never find me using TC so that issue won't apply to me. I have decided to rent VRI and compare. I am only worried about sharpness wide open on VRI and focus speed. The rest I can deal with.
p.1 #20 · Am I crazy to want to trade my 70-200VRII for VRI
The VRI is very good wide open. The II is better wide open. AF speed should be about the same. VR and corner sharpness are better on the II.
You say that this decision is money driven, but by the time you sell your lens, pay some shipping and paypal fees, buy an older lens(gambling that you get one without problems)... Best case scenario you will come out with around $500 to put toward your 24-120VR. Now if you pay to rent a VRI for comparison, you may have $350-400 to go toward your 24-120 at the end of this transaction.
The VRI is really a better lens then it's given credit for being these days, but I just don't think your gonna be happy with the outcome here.
