p.1 #1 · 400 f/5.6 Owners... focus ring axial play/wobble?
I just got a brand new 400 f/5.6 today and wanted to hear from other owners of this lens... The focus ring, when moved on the axis of the lens itself (think push/pull) there is a little play forward and back. It will also make a clicking noise when moved. I had this lens a long time ago so I don't remember how that one was.
Focus ring action is perfect otherwise... Smooth, no play at all.
So for those with this lens, how is your copy? Debating if I should exchange for another if abnormal.

Thanks guys, appreciate it!
Anybody else can verify this for me? I PM'd Roger at lens rentals and he said I should exchange it, that it is not normal. So I am receiving conflicting information.

I have two 400 5.6 (my wife has one) and they both have play and clicking noise. If you don't feel comfortable with the lens you should exchange it. Please let us know if the new one is better. Jay

I have an older 400 5.6 that I purchased used. I have also sent it to Midstate camera for a checkup.
My lens has the click if you push/pull the focus ring, and a very small degree of play.
It performs wonderfully and MF is easy and pleasing to use. I never noticed the play in it until this post.
Perhaps the click is due to the focus ring having a "step-up" in it's diameter as the majority of the focus ring is always visible but a narrower section of it resides underneath the larger diameter pull-out hood?

Took this lens out for a spin today and the results were excellent! One thing I notice though, this lens may not like filters... I am using good ones (Hoya HD) but I notice a weird behavior with this lens that I never did with any other...
Tripod mounted, timer release, live-view focus, etc.... If you do it without a filter, and simply just place the filter on and retake the shot doing nothing else the image is quite a bit softer. Remove it, image is sharp again.
What I notice though, if you refocus the lens with the filter on, the image is sharper again. Almost like the filter is changing the plane of focus. Really weird!
Either way, it does something funky so I took the filter off. Even with the filter on the images were very sharp and looked excellent, but it looks like it will look even better without!
