p.1 #1 · sharp lens adapter - FL to EOS

A friend gave me a suitcase full of old canon lenses that he didn't need anymore. I thought it might be fun to put them on my Canon 40d. I read some reviews and the adapters I could find mentioned that the conversion made the pictures not very sharp. I would prefer sharp to not sharp. I bought a Nikon F to EOS adapter and that is super sharp. I helped my friend find an adapter to use his Hasselblad lenses on his Nikon camera. I know they are out there, I'm just not finding any, so I thought I would ask if anyone else has had luck.

Thanks

Any adapter that uses glass is going to impact sharpness.

You can't convert FL or FD to EF without using glass.

Ed Mika adapters on eBay. Just check if you have correct lens, it doesnt work on all.

For APS-C, get mirrorless, easiest focusing, perfect adapters.

The issue is the distance from the rear of a FL or FD lens to the focal plane. Its 1mm less than a EF lens, so there is no room for a adapter.

You can adapt it to a camera that as a shorter lens to film / sensor like a micro 4/3 or Nex, but trying to adapt it to a Canon difital camera is a exercise in frustration.

Ed Mika makes adapters for the high end EF lenses and somehow finagles enough room to get infinity focus without modifying the lens. The adapters are hand made, and expensive, so they are only worthwhile on expensive glass.

The numbers are here:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flange_focal_distance

You can possibly adapt to a body that has a flange back distance of 46mm or more, which allows 2mm for a adapter.

If you've got a 55mm f/1.2 in there-- it's a gem.

And you can either buy a VERY nicely made, $100+, glassless adaptor (may not reach infinity focus on all cameras), or with about 30 to 45 minutes, you can change the mount itself (fully reversible; no damage; also glassless) by removing the old mount and adding a modified adaptor for XYZ->EOS that costs $15 on ebay.

Otherwise, like everyone else said: Mirrorless w/ adaptor.

EdMika makes various FD to EF mount conversion kits, and one FD to EF adapter. http://www.ebay.ca/sch/ed_mika/m.html?_nkw=&_armrs=1&_from=&_ipg=&_trksid=p3686

With the mount conversion kits you remove the old FD mount and replace it with an EF mount. That is why they work so well. He also sells simple no-glass FD - EF adapter. The first version was .75mm thick and did allow infinty focus, but only with some long lenses. (200mm or longer) The latest version is only .5mm thick!

Here is a very good resource for anyone thinking about using old Manual Focus lenses on EOS bodies: http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/eosfaq/manual_focus_EOS.html
