Built before the Three Gorges Dam- and downstream from it.
It is a mighty structure- and the water thundering through the dam made a deafening roar from up close.
Great image, Charlie. Reminds me of something Richard Pryor said in one of his albums. Paraphrasing but to the effect that NO ONE can keep water from going where it wants.
Thanks Chris, Ray and Kenny.
The purpose of this dam was mainly to control flooding in the Yangtze flood plain, where important crops grow in the rich soil- and tens of millions of people live.

Thanks Ratty and Lazlo.
Some sounds literally shake the earth.
The roar of the water and the general feel of being that close gave the definite impression the earth was shaking... sorta like a moderate earthquake in Los Angeles during my youth. Only much louder .
