This was taken last spring at the shores of Lake Dauphin in Manitoba. When I arrived at this beach the light and scenery was literally jaw dropping surreal. I have a few photos of this scene but it pales in comparison to the real experience. I don't believe the technology exists to truly capture it in a photo. Though I can always try, right?

I am providing 4 variations and would love feedback which you prefer and why you prefer it.

Thank you and enjoy!

Scott,
Wow, surreal is right!!

I would go with #1but would crop some off the bottom to make it less "anchored".

What a great scene

Of all these, I prefer #1. It feels more serene. The clouds in the others are a bit garish and takes away from the serenity of the scene. Also, It seems that the horizon is a bit tilted up towards the right side. Not sure if that's intentional or not, but it did stick out at me.

I think #1 but I'd be tempted to darken down the left hand side a bit and better balance the exposure with the right. Taken individually they are all nice, lovely light.

Scott- Although I really like the image, the brightness and amount of blue is a bit overwhelming.
So I prefer the B&W- which is very close to perfection IMO.

I think #1 has the most surreal light of the set.

Hi Scott,

Very cool shot. I'm going with #2.

For the detail in the rock.
I like the details in the clouds and horizon better.

Although I do think you could bring up the darker FG water a tad to help balance it.

Wonderful image Scott. If I had to pick one it would be #1, but I would want to reduce the highlight levels on that one. Maybe a combination of shadow levels from #1 with the highlight levels of #2.

Very nice. I like #1 as I can get lost in the horizon. Cropping a tad off the bottom tends to give a feel of being further into the water than you are. Nice work.

Hey Scott,

Where is the "none of the above option" in your poll...

#2 is my favorite from this group. I think where the horizon is blown on the left side of them all but #2 hurts those shots.

I prefer #1. The left horizon is a little hot. Great composition!

I'm going to pick #4. You say it was surreal and I think the extra saturated blues help to impart a sense of surreality to the image. Naturally I'm in the minority

Tough question. For me, the very bright tones on the foreground rock are a bit problematic, and they seem like they might slightly blow out. I sort of like the anchoring effect of having the rock there, but...

A way to handle that could be a masked curve that steepens in the lighter tones in order to bring back a few of then not-quite-white tones. A layer using that shadow/highlight tool could work, as could some of the LR or ACR sliders.

The water, reflections, and clouds are striking. I think I'd rather see this one in color.

Thank you all so much for your input and suggestions. All much appreciated!

I have gone back and reworked the image. I am finally happy with how I want this image to look. Like I said in the OP this scene was so surreal I felt like I had transitioned to another planet. Something I hope to experience again one day. Since my GF's parents actually own shore on this lake that might happen.

The final image is definitely a winner here Scott. It just seems more balanced and all the "brighter" parts that were a bit distracting in the beginning iterations are gone and the whole images is more balanced and man those clouds and reflection are just awesome man!

Hey Scott,

I can imagine that was a very surreal experience. That is quite an expanse of water that ends in nothing. I like your edit, but as I viewed it, I wondered what it would look like without that floating thingy...
