Look, I think the buyer is completely outside of his rights to be asking a 3-month-old used lens sale to get repaired on the seller's dime... but I also don't think he's some kind of malicious thief who needs to be crucified on the town gates.
The OP asked a question looking for community responses. He got answers. There's no reason to drag the buyer's name through the mud for asking the question. I don't think it's the seller's responsibility, but I also don't see why the buyer is a horrible human being for seeking some way to not eat a big cost on his recent $1000+ purchase.
I find it interesting to see how people who are completely unrelated to the transaction, and with no evidence that the buyer has bad intent, take it upon themselves to post topics in other forums on the subject or dig up links saying, "is this the transaction?"
