p.3 #1 · buyer wants me to pay for repairs after 3 months
On ebay (as I'm sure almost everyone knows) you can specify if you will take a return, under what circumstances and for how long. All well and good. Somebody with a generous return policy is probably more likely to sell their goods.
For a private sale, unless explicity agreed, there is no comeback whatsoever under any circumstances. That's the risk you take.
I like the idea of taking a video, perhaps sitting on todays newspaper just before the sale to show it's all working, good idea.

I've been on the receiving end and had a 50 1.4 focus motor fail a month or two after buying a used lens. It negated my savings, but it was a risk I took in buying a used lens. Never asked the seller for any help. That said, I would probably return someone's money in the first 30 days if something I sold them failed, as long as I didn't think it was due to abuse. But that's just me. You're good!

You're talking 3 MONTHS Cold day in hell before I'd take it back. I gotta echo a previous poster about the buyer's integrity: 9 feedbacks, 12 posts and all on the B&S board - Nope, he sucketh air far as I'm concerned.

Hmmm, compelling response perhaps you could explain: would you endorse the return to you of an item sold to someone after 3 months or payment of costs to render it operative?
Looks like the guy - sil180sr - is interested in FM just to buy&sell stuff.
PS. I posted the link to B&S forum yesterday evening (Europe time). Someone moved the topic and deleted my post. Not funny.
Maybe Fred (still owns this site AFAIK) thought it's not YOUR business...to "out" the buyer

No kidding.
Look, I think the buyer is completely outside of his rights to be asking a 3-month-old used lens sale to get repaired on the seller's dime... but I also don't think he's some kind of malicious thief who needs to be crucified on the town gates.
The OP asked a question looking for community responses. He got answers. There's no reason to drag the buyer's name through the mud for asking the question. I don't think it's the seller's responsibility, but I also don't see why the buyer is a horrible human being for seeking some way to not eat a big cost on his recent $1000+ purchase.
I find it interesting to see how people who are completely unrelated to the transaction, and with no evidence that the buyer has bad intent, take it upon themselves to post topics in other forums on the subject or dig up links saying, "is this the transaction?" Who cares? Respond to the OP and move on.

I don't think it's about mobbing. So far, we only had the OP side of story. Looks like the buyer is a forum member (unfortunately, an inactive one), and it would be nice if we can learn more about the issue.

That's exactly why I hadn't participated in this thread until now. The OP quickly got answers to his question, and the responses have unanimously confirmed his beliefs. I didn't see a need to post "+1". At this point, I don't think we need to know any more about an issue that was a private transaction between two people. Neither the seller nor the buyer have asked any of us in this thread to intervene, so what do we need more info for? We provided responses to the question that was posed. Seems to me that our work here is done- unless the OP has follow up questions or the buyer chimes in wishing to express his side of the story and asking for input. That's just my .02, however.

I don't know why we're all debating this. Some of you have researched the buyer (3 years, 9 feedbacks, 12 posts all in B&S) but the OP is basically the same. Most of his posts are either FS or asking questions about which lens should he get.
