p.1 #1 · HS Baseball

Here are a few from a game last night. The black and white is an attempt to make the best out of a bad exposure. I was shooting the batter in the shade and swung to catch the steal at second. The image was pretty well overexposed so I tried to make something out of it anyway. Comments always appreciated.

I lust for that lens, and these images are not helping at all!! Of course, I realize technique has a lot to do with it, but still!

The 400 sure does help with the cluttered backgrounds at the high school fields.

Jeff, some thoughts:

Number one is a nice capture, and I like the fielder's eyes. Your timing is good, but I'd prefer to see the ball just entering the mitt, or the tag being made - those would be the peak moments. You're at the mercy of the play itself, though. Plays at second base are best when the runner and ball arrive closer to the same instant, which doesn't always happen.

Number two is a pretty standard pitcher shot, and the coach in the background reduces the value in my book. Any way you can get behind home plate?

The third one is a much better action image - the timing of the ball arriving is spot on, and the fielder looking down at the runner arriving is exciting. I'm not a fan of the selective colorization for exactly the reason why you probably employed it; it makes me think the editor/photographer is using it to cover up something in the image.

Thanks for sharing, and I hope this helps.

Jeff,

My two cents. All three shots are great captures. Dennis' critique are words of wisdom. I would like #3 better if the baseman were also in color. Leave the BG black and white.

Thanks for the comments. The third one was pretty much a throw away but I liked the action.
