A hooded golden eagle sits on its roost. The birds only hunt in the winter months when there is snow on the ground. The white covering helps them pick out their prey.

A snowstorm in Uvs Province makes a boy’s herding job much harder. The horse is equipped with a traditional Mongolian saddle made from wood and covered with felt.

Here are a couple more. The Kazakhs only live in Western Mongolia. When the borders concretely defined China, Russia, Kazakhstan, and Mongolia, a couple ethnic groups ended on the opposite side of the street.

A rug merchant sells Kazakh rugs in Olgii’s central market. The plastic coverings in the front are used to cover ger floors.

An eagle hunter’s son rests in his house. Behind him, several fox pelts are testament to his father’s hunting prowess.

Without many trees for firewood, many Mongolians use dried horse and cow dung to heat their homes. Here are two people walking across the steppe to pick up fuel.

My Kazakh driver clutches the wheel of an old Soviet-era jeep. With sloppy suspension, the vehicle careened across the sandy soil.

The central square in Olgii. The communist star remains above the town despite Mongolia’s transition to democratic capitalism in the early 1990s.
