I wanted to offer a quirky example of early California "courtyard architecture" by Miles Kellogg.
Built in the late 1920's using lumber salvaged from a dance hall that didn't survive Prohibition, the boathouses have become a very popular local landmark. They were purchased by the Encinitas Preservation Association in 2008.
