find this statement hard to believe...I shoot RAW but this is over the top! being reported on a radio stations site cant see how viewing a jpeg degrades it
It's a destructive format. You may not realise this, but each time you even open a Jpeg to view the file, you are doing damage to the file itself. While this is a slow process, each time you do anything to the Jpeg (copying, altering, opening, saving, uploading) the quality of the Jpeg is decreasing and “grain” will slowly appear within the image.
Simply viewing a jpeg does not alter it in any way. Repeatedly saving a jpeg will damage it but in most instances its hardly noticeable and depends on the level of compression used.
In addition, you have to re-save at a different compression level OR change at least one pixel value, forcing a new compression of the file in order to further degrade the file.
The radio station must be full of idiots then. The photos on their site are more than like jpeg. Everyone time someone visits the site, the files are opened and viewed. Someone should warn them soon their site will be filled with grain and the images will be unviewable! lmao
