I'm looking to convert to a 15" MacBook Pro and run 2 Monitors. Compared to the Apple 27" Thunderbolt Display how does the Dell UltraSharp 27" and 30" models stack up to the Apple?

This is one of the most popular questions asked. I dont use them (other than a 2209WA) but in general, they are well regarded but not w/o some issues. I think a 'search' will turn up numerous prior threads..

Though I cannot comment on the size monitors in your post, I can give a quick impression of the Dell ultra sharp U2410 I just picked up. After a quick calibration with spyder4 pro software the colors and images viewed really popped with crispness and colors. It's a recent 2013 build and couldn't be happier!

I have a U2410 and 2209UW here at home, and at work we have a supplier agreement with Dell, so my labs are full of them.
My opinion is that you get what you pay for - cheap ones are cheap, the expensive ones are good. Reliability of my lab machines has been excellent. We are still primarily equipped with old 19 inch 4:3 models because they just keep running. At home my 2209UW is the only screen i've experienced to have problems (Some odd shadowing/streaking at the side). The image quality was excellent though, as is that from my U2410.

I have 3 Dell ultrasharp monitors at home: a u3011 flanked by two 2209wa monitors. At work I have Dell a U2410 that is driven by my laptop's nvidia gpu. I have been very satisfied with the Dell monitors and I believe they are the best value for the money right now.

I'm over Windows and feel like changing to Apple. May opt for 15" MBP with 16GB Memory and if dont go with 27" Thunderbolt Display may go for the 30" Dell Ultrasharp.
Anyone know if the video card on MBP can run the 30" display w/o any problem?

David Brooks writes a Q&A column for Shutterbug Magazine and here's his take on Dell monitors:
"The only Dell UltraSharp I tested and recommended is the 24 U2410. Most of the negative feedback I received was from users who purchased the 27 and 30 UltraSharp U models. A few U2410 models had color irregularities, but the problem was solved when replaced with a new display. Apparently the larger display screen sizes are not the same as the 24. One of my colleagues and a longtime friend purchased a U2410 and had to get it replaced immediately. Now, after more than two years, he has added a second U2410. Thats maybe the better and less costly way to get more screen area. Two Dell UltraSharp U2410s provide twice the screen area, considerably more than a 30 display, and the two displays cost less than a single 30.

I use a Dell u3011 and have no complaints with color match or calibration. I use Color Eyes display for calibration and achieve a outstanding match from screen to print with an Epson 3880.
