ok, here are a few more shots from this and last weekend. mostly common stuff and almost all water birds. not much else around here at this time of year!
(molting) black guillemot. since it was a new one for me, i dealt with the high noon light!
1st winter iceland gull, a classic northeast winter "white-winged" gull
red-breasted merganser - he's courting here, doing this head bobbing thing they do
common goldeneyes, male and female. my gf liked this one......
horned grebe. i was shooting down from a high dock, but i liked it nonetheless
Wow, first one, third one and the last 2 are my picks because I didn't have any of them yet and you did really well capturing these fine set. Thanks for sharing, Dorian
I like them all Dorian! If I had to pick one it would be either the merganser or the grebe. Those are awesome images. But all are excellent images. Well done.
And a beautiful hodgepodge it is Dorian. You have a few of my favorites in here I'm not questioning your knowledge of Alcids but rather discussing. Your Guillemot looks very brown, very much like a Murre. As you know we have Pigeon Guillemots in the north west and they are a charcoal black/grey. I have only see one Black Guillemot and that was quickly passing it in boat, midday, as it was diving so I didn't get a really good look at it. Interesting.

yeah tim this is purely a lighting effect and i am not sure exactly what accounts for it. this shot was taken down on the bird, from a high dock. this is th color that most people associate with them!
A wonderful set, Dorian.
I prefer the red breasted merganser- but that's mostly because their "confused look" always makes me smile. Like this .
