Karl inspired me to go out and give another try today. I think maybe I've somewhat worked out the sharpness issue (or lack thereof). You guys tell me what you think.

OK Koen, I will make an exception for you, you can post the closest bird in your area that resembles the RWBB
Karl
OK, well it turned out to be not that easy.....
The RWBB (Agelaius phoeniceus) belongs in the Icteridae Family and this family is to be found only in the New World, so no relatives in Europe
Yes Wikipedia is my friend
So I looked in my photo library and found a European bird of which the male is totally black and the female brownish, like the RWBB...
But this bird belongs to the Furdidae Family, so not at all related to the RWBB...
To make things even more complicated; in english the name of this bird is: Common blackbird
Anyway,..... I tried
Koen.
European Common Blackbird Female (not related to the RWBB)
Koen you certainly earned your place here, thank you for giving it your best and your shot is welcomed And a lovely low level angle with a nice reflection too!
A good idea, Karl, and some excellent images posted.
The redwings are slow getting started this year in western Oregon- so here's a re-done shot from last year.
At least it's from a digital camera (a fairly good little point and shoot). Zoomed to 400mm and handheld.

I tip my hat to all of you on these fine shots. The RWBB is difficult to get close to but getting the exposure right is often the issue. Well done by all.
More fantastic shots everyone !!
Must tell you a quick story about trying to get a RWBB shot a couple of days ago for this thread. Was on a two lane road, no traffic , had not seen a car for over 20 minutes. I am driving the speed limit of 25mph. Spot a RWBB on a lovely perch with great background. Stop the car , stick my 500 mm out the window and snap away . About 30 seconds later, look up in my rear view mirror and see a police car stopped right behind me . Dang, knew I should not have stopped in the road.
He puts on his lights, pulls me over. What he really wanted to check out what I had sticking out the window . I guess he wanted to make sure it was not some sort of weapon , good grief . He was looking wanting to know what my monopod was as well. At any rate, once took all my information off my drivers license and was satisfied that it was camera, he did not give me a ticket.
To make matters worse, did not like the shots I got !
Well I don't have any RWBB images... but I sure like what y'all have posted so far.
Great start to this thread Karl... very effective use of fill flash on #1, really well done in fact.
#3 is my favorite for the nice profile view.
Excellent job on rendering the black detail, with beautiful red and yellow saturation too.
Very nice work buddy... I'll see if I can find some of these rare birds in SoCal.
