p.1 #1 · Mount Sneffels Blue Lakes- Detour suggestions?
Toying with the idea of adding this as a stop on our drive through Colorado. Has anyone been there in March? Is it under snow then? Just trying to decide if the detour is worth it for this time of the year.

After doing a bit of research on this--I would have to say it is very unlikely you could make this trip without it being on snow and/or via some difficult and wet creek crossings en route. March is awfully early--and even if it is late March it is early for the Colorado high country.

Unless you have proper winter backcountry gear you shouldn't attempt Blue Lakes in March. If you are looking to hike up there I would target June the earliest. For photography the basin will be much better with wildflowers in it which wont happen until late July.

The reason I was thinking about March is because I am driving cross country to go to school in CA. Originally we were going to go to Black Canyon National Park, but that is also closed. Can anyone offer some location suggestions between Great Sand Dunes and Arches?

March is generally considered the snowiest month in Colorado. April rolls into May which are considered mud season months. Right now it's quickly becoming mud season in Moab. You would still be able to roam around in Black Canyon to some extent, or outside the park on highway 92. You are going to be in the same general area anyway. I'd just play it casual... Go to Black Canyon, you don't like it,then head to Telluride... Then take 145 to 141 to 90 which becomes Utah 46 over to La Sal and Utah...

I would shoot over to Mesa Verde from the Dunes, then over to Monument Valley and then up 191 to the Needles District of Canyonlands, then up to Moab.

+1 The desert in March can be really nice, though windy.
