Refurb is great for big ticket items, ones that you would buy a warranty at square trade to cover, but for the cheaper stuff its usually better to spend a few bucks more and buy new.

Agreed. I'd rather pick up one new from BHphoto for $150 shipped.
I picked up one new at best buy and from what I have seen it appears to be a pretty good lens. Compared to the 50mm 1.8 plastic fantastic the 40mm 2.8 has a metal mount.
Yes it is small, which means its easy to carry in your pocket or takes up very little room in your camera bag. It is also one of the first generation STM motors which appears to work well so far.
I like the fact that hardly sticks out from the camera and appears to take a very sharp image.
