Howdy, shooters! I'd been using the D7K 300 f4 w/wo TC-17E II for my good light BIF set-up...
and I thought I'd try out the title combo on that paltry 4 fps D800. Knowing full well I have
the 1.2/1.5 modes at my disposal, for a blistering 5 and 6 fps respectively...I took the gamble.
I've shot this before with the likes of the D3/D700 but any cropping and the files soon fell apart.
IIRC I wasn't completely thrilled with anything over ~40 yds so I made it a point to seek out the
action from 75 yds plus. These are shot in FX and cropped like a 'monkey Yes, handheld with
my trusty B'Hawk and presented for your perusal otherwise SOOC. A workout that DELIVERS.
Nice set Will. Are you finding this setup to be superior to the 300 f4 with 1.7? It's only a half a stop faster (hmmm am i figuring that right?) but you're using a 2x which makes me wonder.

Thank you, Jim. It's actually 1 and 1/2 stops and MUCH faster AF speed/accuracy. In 1.2 mode (480mm vs 500)
the IQ is better with this combo. HTH

awesome...Love #2 Will! I have the same combo... a little soft wide open but stop it down to 5.6 and this effer is SHARP!
Thanks, Joseph I couldn't tell much difference between f5 and f5.6 so I'll stay with f5
for a lil more SS. Maiden outing with the D800 so I haven't fine tuned it yet w/ this TC. 2/3 of
a stop down on the TC-17E II was all that was required too. Happy times!
hey tm,
Every time I make a decision I see some of your work and you give me reason to consider the d800.
I had pre ordered the d7100 and was considering the 70-200 f2.8 vr to use in 1.3 mode which gives me 15mp and reach to 400mm.
What do you think of this combo vs. d800 which will load my imac if I shoot in raw.
I think you said you shoot in jpeg is that correct?
Thanks

I get that a lot. The D7100 looks great for BIF. I'd be inclined to go with the AF-S 300 f4 w/wo HSC
as you know one can never be "long enough" in this endeavor. Funny you mention your iMac...I just upgraded
my RAM and came home from a D800 FX shoot...took all of 3 minutes to download 360 pics. Prior to that it'd
get 1/2 way thru and hang up (beachball/pinwheel) and I'd force quit and try again. It'd take FOREVER. No mas
I am a Jpeg guy, but the files are still HUGE
by the way nice shots!
Do you see any significant advantage for me in getting the 800 over the 7100?
I realize you can only respond based on specs, rather then actual shooting of the 7100.
Nice pics. How did you like that combo, because the only time I tried a 200VR I found the lens a bit too big to handle. I prefer to handhold a 300 2.8 with TC or the 200-400 over that 200, but that's just me.

Guy
Appreciate it, Guy. I love the Chubby (my 3rd) was w/o one for 14 months and was sick over it.
Rodeo starts up in a couple of weeks...I have to have f2 in these arenas, living at ISO6400/8000.
Regarding the handling, it's heavy (12.2 lbs) but I'm a pretty powerful old man & good for a few hrs.
