If the goal was to put as many pixels as possible on every foot of real estate, the choice of the 7D makes sense, but even more pixels could have been put on everything in the scene had a 600/4 or even an 800/5.6 been used.
The 400mm 2.8 was paired with a 2x extender, so this was already at 800mm 5.6. Also going to an even longer focal length also means taking an even larger number of pictures than the 48000 that they took right now, and that also means adding a few more months to the 3 months that the computer took in processing the current pano and so on. I assume this group which has been able to pull off this gigantic effort must have considered all the tradeoffs extensively before heading to do something of this magnitude.

I surmise that the cropped sensor of the 7D was used because the images accrued the optimal 40% of the lens IQ characteristics. Minimal vignetting, for one.
And Peter, as a member of the 400II club: what IQ degradation??

Hey Rob. That is a bit of a spoiler. Giving the location away has spoilt it fro all those others enjoying the challenge of looking for it. May I suggest you remove it?

Why use a 400 f2.8 without a teleconverter? I've done these with a 400 f5.6 just fine...you want to really up the anty use a 600mm or 800mm lens, just going with higher megapixel cameras is a cop out.
