Guess I have to learn how to shoot landscapes in the dark, as most of my forum participation is either pre-dawn or post sunset.
This thread makes me chuckle a little. Some people need a little more DR and want it (my camp), some people don't feel they need any more DR and don't care (but to some extent extrapolate and think others don't need it either.)
Too much dynamic range can also be dangerous if you do not know how or when to use it. When initially going digital, I tried too hard to preserve all the detail I could, only to realize later I had produced a pile of lifeless images devoid of contrast and guts. I spent a lot of time reworking those images once I awoke to my artistic errors. More is almost always better, as long as you know when to use it and how much to use.
True...I just would like to be able to bring up the shadows a little more in high contrast situations (inherently wide DR scenes.) Not too much...just enough to see detail there so they don't looked crushed.
A-ha. The shadow noise on the 5D3 is disgusting. That's something that I was actually truly disappointed with. To the point which I thought my camera might have been faulty.

Disgusting?
A bit of hyperbole perhaps?
I have used my 5D2 alongside my 1Ds3 for years in all sorts of environments and the files have been essentially identical (except the 5D is much better at high ISO)

Well maybe the 1Ds3 shadow noise is also disgusting.

Seems you'll be better off with Nikons
Why is that? It's just a comment, and a legitimate one at that. I am not alone in feeling the 5D3 is a great camera, but like all tech it has its shortcomings - and one of those shortcomings is dirty shadow noise.

If the 5D2 noise is really (to use your word) 'disgusting' to you you would probably be better off with Nikons.
Many of your comments are about how bad Canon products are yet here you still are in the Canon forum.

Isn't it great we all have differing opinions on topics. Wouldn't these threads become boring if everyone agreed. Why is it this "why don't you move to Nikon" statement always has to emerge when people don't agree?

What's the point of hanging out in a forum if you just have nothing positive to say about the products dicussed?
Borderline trolling.

And isn't it great Fred gives us the "Hide Me" button? It really raises the intelligence level of these threads when you don't see the comments from certain individuals...

Because it's your only option at the current time and foreseeable future if you need better low ISO DR. You are posting in a gear forum. Why wouldn't someone tell you to get the equipment that provides you with that capability?

To discuss and learn about gear and how differing people use the gear and their views on the gear. Do you only want to hear like opinions...plug your ears when someone does not agree with you. The topic of this thread is dynamic range. When you entered the thread...what did you think would be discussed? Did you really think comparisons between different manufactures would not come up? Did you really think comparisons between Canon and Nikon DR would not be discussed. Can I ask you why did you participate in the thread?
For me, DR is a very important feature as I always struggle with the photos I take. I resort to using GND filters and multiple exposures and merging. What is your interest in DR other than to bash people who could use more DR in their daily shooting. Please elaborate your interests in this subject.
