That was quite a lot of fine print, my friend

13% Sales Tax that's highway robbery.

Good thing I renewed my CPS on Monday, I'll save the $200 finder fee and only pay 5% sales tax.

Though I think the people in Montana get the best deal 0% sales tax.

Again, the suspected price of the Canon 200-400mm is absurd.

Way, Way too expensive. I will take a 300 2.8 IS II and converters thank you...

Nils, that is funny and tragic at the same time.

Perhaps your income tax rate is lower than ours ?
Can't bend my mind about such high serial taxation. Would all that money be required to fund the cost of running the EU bureaucracy apparatus ?

Either way, I got some ideas on how you can bypass VAT on your 200-400L acquisition:

(1) Buy it in US or Asia, and then smuggle it back into Denmark.
(2) Declare it as a business expense for pro photography......VAT exemption applies.
(3) Declare it an R&D tool to be used in one of the government subsidized projects of vital importance to the Danish society, such as " Bilateral traumatic relationships and adaptations of adults who suffer from the disorder of compulsive disrobing (flashing) in public places.".....VAT exemption applies.

I agree but alas there is talk to solve our problem is to institute a provincial/state(for our American friends) sales tax here to solve our governments spending problem. All I can say if this ever comes about I am going to go into politics for one of the opposition parties because if it is ever instituted here the ruling party will be out in the next election.

No matter how you look at it PST, GST, HST, VAT, state tax, city tax all come out with the same problem it costs us way too much extra to acquire our as Peter puts it Gears.

See, that's what you get for dealing with a fly-by-night operation. If you just let me get the lens first, I can resell it to you, as a proper export, through my business, and you won't be subject to the 13% tax.

The only catch is you'll have to wait until at least the end of December so I can first shoot the football season with it.

You know, a 200-400 f/4 is a damned inconvenient way to take a 200mm f/4 photograph.

Don't bother wasting your energy arguing with spec-sheet photographers.

p.2 #11 · Canon Ef 200-400F4L IS Release Date

I went along to shoot at London Fashion Weekend this evening (CPS invite) and afterwards I spoke to one of the Canon staff about the 200-400L. I mentioned it would probably be around the same price at the 600 ii (+-US$13k). He said and I'm not joking, "It will be more like £15k". That's around US $19k direct conversion. I hope he was talking out of his smellier end, because that is a shocking price for a zoom, no matter how "special". He claimed it was because it "replaced several primes". I was tempted ask if he meant the 300mm f/4 and 400mm f/5.6, because it sure as hell doesn't replace the 300 and 400 2.8's...

Stu, one never knows with Canon these days........in their arrogance they might be thinking that if Nikon could be asking $18,000 for their new 800L, then the 200-400L superzoom should be priced in a similar manner. In truth, even at that price they would sell some....perhaps 4-5 units per year worldwide, after the initial buying "rush" had been satisfied.

Very true Peter, and if the price drops to half that proposed price I might even buy one Charging the best part of US$20k for a f/4 zoom would be arrogance inextremis!

However, should Nikkor 800 lens live up to its specs, I might get it together with one of their better cameras such as D800, and the way to finance that would be thru......

(1) money saved by not buying 200-400L, plus....
(2) proceeds of my 800L sale.

We shall see what the 800VR initial verdict will be, hopefully by this summer.

The D800's buffer and AF/FPS as well, are a problem, it couldn't keep up with the 5D3, I guess it won't cut it for ya Peter...at least not for BIF IMHO...so you'd be stuck getting their 16mp rocket the D4 and an 18,000 dollar 800mm...an odd choice given your current gears kit

I'm not a Canon fanboy at all

Keep in mind the D800 is nowhere near FPS capabilities as the 1DX and when you realize you need the 1Dx FPS you can still attach the Nikon 800 to your 1DX with an adapter but you will have no VR or AF and that will really suck at 12-14FPS and having to MF the whole time.

You will then get so frustrated you'll end up dumping the 800 to me for dirt cheap, and then I'll sell you my EF 800L because you will miss it (Sorry Jim) and then with the proceeds I'll buy the 800 MKII.

Jerry, I know what you are saying, but a 4.5-4.6 kg front heavy 800mm f/5.6 lens is best used on a tripod, on slow/stationary targets where one doesn't need very high FPS or a super duper AF.....thus a camera such as D800 would do great.

However, 800VR would have to be of outstanding peformance, before I'd consider swapping 800L for it.
